Wellington, Arthur Wellesey, 1st Duke. Letter signed, Brussels, May 8th 1815, stamped 'Rec May 12', addressed to 'The Right Honble The Secretary at War' [Earl Bathurst], 1 page, 192mm x 310mm 'My Lord, I have the Honor to enclose a list of Medicines and materials required for the use of this army, which I beg your Lordship to have sent to this Country as soon as possible'. Framed, glazed both sides. An important letter written during the build up to the battle of Waterloo, which took place on June 18th, nine miles south of Brussels. On May 8th 1815, Wellington was in Brussels preparing to engage with the advancing French army, lead by Napoleon. Two days earlier, the King of the Netherlands had placed his army under the Duke's command. On the same day he wrote the letter offered here, Wellington also wrote at length to Lord Stewart, discussing tactics and required troop numbers, 'Let us begin when we have 450,000 men.' (Dispatches, p.361). Supplies for such a large army were often problematic, a weakness Napoleon manipulated through false intelligence.
