Colonel Humphrey ‘Dumper’ Watts, OBE (1880-1946), of Haslington Hall, Cheshire, his album of 39 photographs, compiled while a captain in the 3rd (Volunteer) Battalion, Cheshire Regiment, including 11 large format views of Oxford, its colleges and a set of rooms (presumably Watts'), the others, mostly annotated, the officers posed on manoeuvres, including Aldershot 1900, Laffan's Plain 1900, Chelsea 1901, Deganwy 1903, Salisbury Plain 1902, Powys 1905 & 1906, Conway [i.e. Conwy] 1909, Abergavenny 1907 & 1908, School of Musketry at Hythe August 1911, Aberystwyth 1910 (2) & 1911, Carmarthen 1912, some of the British Army camps, etc., contemporary green quarter-morocco gilt over cloth boards, the upper-cover monogrammed in gilt: H.W., all-edges gilt, oblong medium folio (32.5cm x 44.5cm)

Guglielmo Choul [...], Con i Bagni, & essercitij antichi de Greci, & Romani [...], À Lione [i.e. Lyon]: Appresso Guglielmo Rovillio, 1556, collating a-o⁴, A-E⁴, ❧⁴, lacking the folding table, woodcut printer's armorial device on title-page, some ornamental letters, b1's is coloured, presumably by a later hand, bas relief headers and ornamental tail-pieces, in-text illustrations of the Roman army and classical antiquities, a broad margined copy, the title-page with marginal repaired worm trails, lower-margin with a constant worm hole, becoming more apparent by the end and developing into inner-marginal worming, but never affecting text, some soiling and dust in places, never affecting legibility, the second part with varying degrees of staining to the lower-margin, never touching text or any illustrations, contemporary parchment over boards, some worn losses to the binding, including the spine's contemporary manuscript lettering, the lower-edge of the text block with contemporary MS lettered short-title for shelving: Discorso s. la Ca***., recto pastedown with two distinct shelf numberings: A.3. & B.l.5., further inscribed fine tall copy, with which we agree, and Quaritch Cat no 347 [...], 4to (33 x 23cm) Provenance: Sir Compton Domvile, 1st Baronet (c.1775-1857), of Templeogue and Santry House, Irish MP and Governor of the County of Dublin; his fragmentary armorial bookplate to recto pastedown.
Local Interest, Methodism in Georgian Nottinghamshire. Joseph Raynor of Mansfield, civil engineer and an ardent Methodist, his commonplace book, dated from October 1804, [53]ff of ink manuscript, mostly transcriptions and thoughts of a religious nature, including references to the Holy Bible, there is however an odd account of the 'Happy Death' of a soldier, John Birks, who died at Mansfield on 3rd October 1804, who, having left his regiment on furlough, drew his pay and spent most of it on the stagecoach to Mansfield, where he was not afraid to die, glad that he saw the face of a Methodist - which he wouldn't have done at the army camp, the verso with some multiplication tables and mathematics, contemporary calf over marbled boards, perished, loosening contents, later 19th century printed yellow book label of his descendant: Thos. A First World War medal group, including one "For Distinguished Conduct in the Field" awarded to 67096 C S MJR W Arkinstall 16/N 8DR, also 1914 bronze star with 5th Aug-22nd Nov 1914 bar, also mounted miniatures which bears a Regular Army Long service and Good Conduct medal, together with documents and photographs, some framed, one important piece is a dispatch hand written on headed note "The Major-General commanding the 39th Division wishes to place on record his appreciation..." then hand written record of Arkinstalls devotion to duty on Sept 20th 1917 S E of Ypres, mentioning that all the platoon officers in the company were casualties, through energy and resource he reorganised the situation
