Rare “Junior Army & Navy Lawn Tennis” pine equipment box c1875-1885 – the early pine box is painted with red/blue /red stripes on the outside, the hinged lid reveals the original colour lithograph pictorial label featuring mixed doubles tennis scene with a view of possibly Windsor castle in the background. It also complete with internal partitions which very rarely survive over the years – the box measures 39” x 15.5” x 9.5” max c/w cast iron carrying handle to the front panel and pine handle support to the rear panel, closing hooks, and original wavy end supports to the base Note: This is a good variation on other similar boxes which feature different tennis scene (no castle) and it’s describes as “Junior” although the box is full size. Atkinson (James). Sketches in Afghaunistan, Henry Graves & Co., 1842, lithographed title, dedication, 25 fine lithographed plates by Louis and Charles Haghe after Atkinson, with later hand-colouring, heightened with gum arabic, each captioned and mounted on card, description leaf printed in blue, title with repaired tear at lower margin, one or two light marginal spots, dedication and text leaves with small closed marginal tears, original moire cloth rebound in recent green half morocco, light stains to boards, folio (53 x 36cm). Abbey Travel 508. James Atkinson (1780-1852) was a British army surgeon, artist and Persian scholar. Appointed Superintending Surgeon of the Bengal Division, in 1838, he joined Sir John KeaneÕs expeditionary force to Afghanistan to oust the pro-Russian ruler Dost Muhammad Khan, thus begining the First Afghan War (1839-1842). The present work is an important record of the previously unseen topography of Afghanistan, and includes views of mountain passes, gorges, fortresses, valleys, tombs and towns. (1)

Delhi, Friday 6th December, 1839, single sheet printed broadside, printed in five columns, describing the storm and capture of Khelat, by T.H. Maddock, Secretary to the Government of India and T. Willshire, Major-General Commanding Bombay Column, Army of the Indus, marginal archival tissue repair at foot and verso, light spots and creases, 50.5 x 40.5cm. The Bombay Column launched a punitive attack on Kalat on November 13, 1839, from where Baloch tribesmen attacked the Army of the Indus passing through the Bolan Pass, during the First Afghan War of 1839-42.
