LADY BUTLER (AFTER) THE REMAINS OF AN ARMY, JELLALABAD Oil on canvas 91cm x 158cm (36in x 62in) Note: The original painting upon which this composition is based was gifted to the Tate Gallery, London, by Sir Henry Tate in 1897. The painting commemorates one of the worst disasters in British military history. In 1842, during the First Afghan War, the British Army in Kabul was forced to retreat sixty miles over snow-covered passes to the fort at Jellalabad, while being continually harried by the Afghans. When Dr. William Brydon, an Assistant Surgeon in the Bengal Army, arrived alone at the gates of Jellalabad it was thought he was the sole survivor of a force which had been some 16,000 strong. A few others eventually struggled through to the fort.

Indian Army WW1 period Officer's Infantry sword by Mole. A very good clean example of the regulation Infantry pattern. The blade with cutler's details of Robert Mole Birmingham and is also etched with a crowned GVR cypher. The guard with a ERI Crowned cypher, that encloses the shagreen grip with has twist wire binding. Housed in polished brown leather field service scabbard. Overall GC clean condition, but the plating to the guard is now polished to the base brass metal.
WW1 Pattern British Army Machine Gunners Vest. A scare example of the type. Two large padded shoulder panels with three brass General Service buttons to the front. White cotton trim to the arm holes and with waxed cotton band to the interior. Minor storage wear Near VGC. The white trim and wax cotton is typical of a WW1 issue, later issues had khaki trim and band. This example bears a post 1924 WD issue stamp
U.S. Army WW1 experimental trench armour c. 1918. Good rare example comprising back plate complete with an articulated section below; small asymmetrical upper front breastplate; and the front plate below that, formerly connected by brown leather straps 2 in. wide (of which small sections remain). 6th Dragoon Guards (Carabiniers) 1914 dated Trooper's Full Dress tunic. Very good example of dark blue material, with white facings to the collar and cuffs. Decorated with yellow mohair Austrian knots to the cuffs and with shoulder cords. The interior is with half white blanket lining retaining June 1914 Royal Army Clothing Factory label. Near unissued condition. VGC.
German Third Reich WW2 Army reed green denim Field Service Tunic. A very good scarce four pocket herringbone issue complete with removable pebbled buttons, Infanty collar patches and BeVo breast eagle and swastika. Also with correct pattern shoulder sraps with red piping. Retains internal field dressing pocket. Belt hooks absent, otherwise near VGC.

Mounted as originally worn. Lance Corporal Calum Grant served seven years with the Army he complete two tours in Iraq and one tour in Afghanistan.
German Third Reich WW2 Army / Waffen-SS Infantry Assault breast badge in bronze by Josef Felix & Söhne, Gablonz Fine scarce die-cast bronzed zinc example awarded to Motorised Infantry recipients with JFS logo to reverse. Rifle with fixed bayonet superimposed on oval oak wreath surmounted by eagle and swastika. Vertical round pin with ball fitting and JFS style hook fitting to the reverse. Retains original finish. VGC Designed by Junker of Berlin and instituted 20th December 1939, bronzed version authorised 1st June 1940.
WW2 RAF North Africa Campaign Air Gunner's Medals & Logbook. Recording the RAF career of flying Officer N.S. Thomas who flew operationally with 37 Squadron. 1939/45 Star, Africa Star, clasp North Africa 1942-43, Defence Medal, War Medal. Mounted as originally worn ... Aircrew Logbook covering the period 1st November 1941 to 24th July 1944 including 6 Operations ... Air Gunner's brevet badge ... Side cap badge ... RAF Service and Release book ... Correspondence regarding medal issue ... etc. Flying Officer N S Thomas, originally served in the ranks of the Territorial Army before volunteering and transferring to the RAF qualifying as an Air Gunner. He was posted to 37 Squadron operating the Wellington bomber in North Africa in November 1942 and flew his first op to Crete on the 24th December 1942. By the 18th January 1943 he had completed 6 operations, one of these involving a flight to Malta on the on the 8th January and a crash landing on the 11th January. After a short posting with 70 Squadron he returned to the UK as a Gunnery Instructor with AGS. He was demobbed from the RAF on the 8th January 1946.

German Third Reich Army Officer's Dagger by rare maker Arthur Everit, Solingen. Good example circa 1935-45 with cream spiral celluloid grip and plain polished double-edged blade etched with rectanglar AES logo. Plated eagle and swastika cross-guard, oak leaf decoration to pommel and ferrule. Housed in stippled plated scabbard with two suspension rings and foliate lockets. GC Dagger was designed by Paul Casburg in 1935.

Oak leaf ornamented pommel, crossguard and langet bearing an eagle and swastika, the blade etched with maker's Alcoso scales logo. Housed in its plated pebbled scabbard with both oakleaf bands retaining loose suspension rings and velvet packed aluminium lace straps. Complete with rather worn aluminium wire portepee (knot). Minor hairlines to reverse of grip. Service wear. GC Army (Heer) Officer's dagger was designed by Paul Casburg in 1935.

During the mid 13th century, the axes were favourited by Baltic people. For instance, the Curonian army included lightly armed soldiers who fought with spears, shields, fighting knives and axes. A heavily armed soldier could also carry a sword, a helmet, a shield and a wide bladed axe.From the private collection of a London gentleman, from his grandfather's collection formed before the early 1970s.
