Babylonian King Nebuchadnezzar II Temple Foundation Brick, 605-562 BC A baked clay rectangular brick with thirteen columns of cuneiform text mentioning the foundation of a temple by Nebuchadnezzar II. 19cm. Nebuchadnezzar II (from the Akkadian meaning "O god Nabu, preserve/defend my firstborn son") was king of Babylon from 605 BC to 562 BC, the longest and most powerful reign of any monarch in the Neo-Babylonian empire. Nebuchadnezzar was the eldest son and successor of Nabopolassar, an Assyrian official who rebelled and established himself as king of Babylon in 620 BC; the dynasty he established ruled until 539 BC, when the Neo-Babylonian Empire was conquered by Cyrus the Great. Nebuchadnezzar is first mentioned in 607 BC, during the destruction of Babylon's arch-enemy Assyria, at which point he was already crown prince. In 605 BC he and his ally Cyaxares, ruler of the Medes and Persians, led an army against the Assyrians and Egyptians, who were then occupying Syria, and in the ensuing Battle of Carchemish Necho II was defeated and Syria and Phoenicia were brought under the control of Babylon. Size: Provenance: Ex. Swizterland Collection, acquired over the last decade on the art market.
A fascinating and unique personal WWII Second World War period photograph album, belonging to a Bristol nurse of the 101 British General Hospital (sent into Europe after D-Day & VE-Day to tend to soldiers). The album - completely filled - features candid images of the nurses time spent in Belgium, Germany, and other locations in Europe just as the war was coming to an end, and as it ended. Throughout the album are various documents / souvenirs including a typed poem (likely by the album's owner), ' Non-Fraternisation ' pamphlets (forbidding the British to Fraternise with any Germans), German money, various orders of service for VE-Day celebrations. Many of the photographs are taken of the nurse and her friends (largely Eileen, Peggy and Thelma), several photographs of ' 101 Hospital ' (in Belgium - at the Institut Du Sacré Coeur), heavy bomb damage in Munster, ' K ' Ward, Antwerp, ' VE Night Campaign In Mugs!', some wonderful pictures titled ' Leaving 101 Hospital ' showing the entire 101 BGH unit alongside an aeroplane, various bombed bridges in Germany. A fascinating glimpse into a war-torn Europe immediately after the war, and into nursing at the time. Towards the rear of the album, and likely post-War, is a section titled ' Bristol Army Blood Transfusion Centre ' and features several candid images of staff at the centre, procedures, etc.
An incredibly rare WWI First World War silver plated Imperial German plaque commemorating Franz Stabbert - Kapitanleutnant of Zeppelin LZ93 (L44) after it's crash in France, 1917. The plaque with makers marks to verso for ' J. Godet & Sohn ' measures 23cm x 16cm, and features an Imperial German Zeppelin badge to the top, and reads ' Franz Stabbert - Kommandant L44 = Fur Herausragende Leistungen Im Luftkreig - DELAG - Friedrichshafen - 1917 '. (For Outstanding Performance In The Air). The border features an Imperial Cross to each corner. Within it's original presentation case. Incredibly rare and interesting piece of history. Note: 'L44' denotes the 'tactical numbering system' of early Zeppelins, it's production number was LZ93. Kapitänleutnant Franz Stabbert was a Kapitänleutnant of the German Kaiserliche Marine. Stabbert was in command of LZ 93 when he took off from Tønder in the night of 19 October 1917 to participate in a so-called silent raid over England with 10 other airships. After completing its mission the LZ 93 set course for Tønder to head home on the morning of 20 October 1917. The ship however came in trouble over France near Chenevières as it was passing a storm. The ship climbed to a height of 6 km in an attempt to outflee the storm, but suddenly the ship was hit by anti aircraft fire from the French army-artillery 174th section of Chenevières and Saint-Clément southeast of Luneville in the department of Meurthe-et-Moselle and the region Lorraine. After being hit, the ship caught fire and ultimately the hydrogen filled gas cells exploded before plunging nearly completely vertical to the untouched French soil below. The LZ 93 was photographed during its fall to Earth and the pictures were published in the weekly Le Miroir on 4 November 1917. All crew onboard the airship perished in the disaster and the body of commander Stabbert can be seen next to his ship on the picture taken from the wreck. It is believed that the crew died when they were crushed by the zeppelin when it smashed into the ground, suggesting that the crew was fully aware of their 6 km long descent. The crew were all buried in the city of Gerbéviller. Four other zeppelins who had accompanied LZ 93 on its raid were also shot down above France.
