Pyne, J.C. - Note and Sketch book, ca. 1878, Oblong 8o, contemporary calf, Pyne was an officer in the 54th Regiment and this work chronicles the regiment's trip over to India on H.M.S. Jumna and Pyne's subsequent observations of the Indian sub-continent, many of the sketches watercolour or pencil and ink, a series of mathematical notes at the rear as well as various descriptive notes interspersed throughout. Pyne, H.B. & J.C. - Old Sketches copied by J.C Pyne for H.B.P., Aden, Bound at the jail, May 1886, 4o, sketches of Parisian life and also a series of sketches on life and customs of late 1880s Brazil, including a pencil sketch of ships off Rio Janeiro harbour, two loose letters, one from H. Pyne to his mother dated Sunday 22nd December 1878 from an army depot in the India sub-continent and the second from J.C Pyne to his brother H.B. Pyne from Paris dated April 17th 1885, both letters with coloured illustrations.

Foster (Lieut. Col. Rodney) Autobiography, 19 manuscript diaries covering the period 1882-1962, each approx. 11 x 8in. The diaries are very comprehensive and include 100's of watercolours, maps, photographs and caricatures plus biographical descriptions and thumb nail sketches of many of the people mentioned, particularly the military. Also included is a manuscript binder identifying 'Fosters' in the British Army since the 18th century, 2 vols of watercolours which include caricatures, cartoons, native inhabitants and military types, a bound volume of individual 'La Vie Parisienne' magazines, 1920's, a contemporary typescript diary 'Chitral Reliefs 1904' with the supporting column. Includes maps and watercolours plus a 'writing album' containing watercolours, photos, cartoons, etc. (shelf)
Stuart (Charles Edward, called the Young Pretender, 1720-1788) A.L.s. to the Comte d'Argenson, 1p., 4to, Passy (the seat of Madame de Sessac), 22nd May 1747, having heard that the king is about to join his army (for the campaign in Flanders), he repeats his willingness to serve "etant toujours ses ordres si l'occasion se presentait" and passes on news of his supporters in Scotland "qui sont toujours dans les mÍmes dispositions; mais ils exigent le mime nombres de forces que j'avais deja marque, a peu pres, S.M.T.C.", endorsed by d'Argenson: "Rep.le 28 apres en avoir rendu compte au Roy"; A.L.s. to the Comte d'Argenson, 1p., 4to, Saint-Ouen (the seat of Cardinal Rohan), 2nd August, 1747, announcing that as Sir John Graham (envoy from James Stuart at Rome) has been granted his father's permission to leave Paris, letters should henceforth be addressed to John Waters; A.L.s. to the Comte d'Argenson, 1p., 4to, Saint-Ouen, 3rd November 1747, announcing that he has chosen Monsieur de Lally (Thomas Arthur Tolendal, Comte de Lally, Jacobite sympathiser) to be his personal intermediary with the minister; A.L.s. to the Comte d'Argenson, p., 4to, Paris, 1st January 1748, advising that he has sought an audience with the king through the good offices of the Duc de Gesvres (first gentleman of the Royal Chamber) "chez qui j'iray descendre demain cinq heures du soir et attendray le moment a S.M. sera visible" (4).
Miller (Glenn, band leader, 1904-44) T.L.s. to "Dear President", 1p., 4to, on Glenn Miller Orchestra writing paper, laid down on card, New York or New Jersey, 30th September 1942, announcing his imminent enlistment in the U.S. Army Specialist Corps., "We are disbanding, but when the war is over we hope to have the whole gang back again"; and two portrait photgraphs, one playing a trombone, the other in uniform, both signed on the image, 205 x 250mm. and 115 x 150mm. Japanese Woodblock Prints.- Eishi. Bijin-ga Portrait of a Young Lady threading a Needle, woodblock print, 365 x 235mm., unexamined out of frame, printed in the limited pastel colours of the beni-girai, slight fading, and surface wear, light creasing, with censor seal and publisher's seal of Yeijudo of Yedo, framed and glazed, 1790s; with 8 other Japanese colour woodblock prints, including a memorial portrait of an artist by Toyokuni and a warrior hero of the Seikoden by Kuniyoshi, also a panoramic triptych of an army marching around a bay, average 360 x 245mm., the triptych 345 x 710mm., occasional surface dirt and slight damp-staining, minor losses at edges of three prints, three others in frames, 19th century (9).
Portugal.- L'Eveque (Henry) Campaigns of the British Army in Portugal, Under the Command of General the Earl of Wellington, K.B., portrait frontispiece, title and 18 plates, with 1 extra, engravings by Bartolozzi, Vendramini, Heath and others, after L'Eveque, including four proof plates engraved by the artist, average c.375 x 525mm., the extra illustration a lithographed equestrian portrait of the elderly Duke, 345 x 280mm., unevenly trimmed, laid onto verso of front free end-paper with a letter from Wellington cut from The Times of 1847, the frontispiece portrait and the final plate laid onto paper supports, with short marginal tears, some damp-staining throughout, surface dirt, occasional light spotting, partially disbound in 19th century gilt-lettered boards, worn, detached, back strip missing, folio, Colnaghi & Co., 1812 (?but 1815). *** The plates include the unnumbered view of The Departure of His R.H. the Prince Regent of Portugal for the Brazils, followed by 17 numbered plates, the last four being the proofs by L'Eveque, the pagination of the related descriptive text suggesting this was an expanded edition.
