He started taking evening classes at the Vilnius Academy of Arts and joined the Yung Vilno, a group which was formed by young artists, Yiddish writers and poets. In 1927, he left for Germany where he joined the Bauhaus school in Dessau. From 1928 to 1932, he studied under Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, and Lyonel Feininger. In 1933, Bagel moved to Paris where following the outbreak of World War II in 1939, he enlisted in the French army. He was later discharged from service and worked for an architect in Toulouse. After the end of the war, Bagel returned to Paris working in set design for the Yiddish art theatre company YIKUM and as an illustrator for numerous Yiddish journals, such as Presse Nouvelle (New Press), Droit et Liberté (Law and Freedom), La Semaine Juive (The Jewish Week), A Nouveau (Once Again). Lot 62

China.- Mao Tse-tung. Quotations of Chairman Mao, first complete edition (i.e. third edition) of Mao's final text, variant issue with Lin Biao's endorsement leaf uncorrected, title printed in red and green, portrait of Mao in sepia, two printed slips in pocket at rear as issued (but often lacking), small patch of damp-staining affecting title, half-title and front free endpaper, original red vinyl covers, 12mo, compiled and printed by the Central Intelligence Bureau of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, Beijing, August 1965.⁂ The third edition of the Little Red Book and the first printing containing all 33 chapters and the basis for all future reprints and all translations. The original 1964 version had only 30 chapters and comprises 250pp, and the second edition (March 1965) added two more chapters taking the text to 260pp. Thus, this third edition adds the thirty-third chapter for the first time and extends the text to 270pp.. The text error in the calligraphic endorsement by Lin Biao found in all copies of the 1964 first edition was corrected in all subsequent copies (though lacking entirely in the 2nd edition). Nearly all copies of this August 1965 third edition has the endorsement leaf corrected. Curiously, in this copy, the error still occurs. Only the 2014 Grolier Club catalogue (page 49) mentions the existence of this error but indicates it has been noted in only "a few copies" and almost always the endorsement is corrected.
