A Very Rare Cased Six-shot 54-bore Model 1866. J. Adams Percussion Revolver 6" sighted octagonal barrel engraved ‘Adams s Patent Small Arms Company 391. Strand London’ rammer mounted beneath plain cylinder frame engraved ‘Adams s Patent Improved no.23’ chequered one piece wood grips. In its baize lined fitted oak case with adjustable copper bodied powder flask by James Dixon cleaning rod nipple wrench with integral pricker pewter oil bottle by James Dixon turned boxwood container for spare nipples and a lacquered tin with the remains of an Eley Brothers label containing lubricant brass escutcheon to lid with partly erased inscription ‘To [name erased] in remembrance of Trinity College Cambridge’. The gun retains virtually all its original blue finish. Percussion revolvers by John Adams brother of Robert are rarely encountered although they formed the basis of the centre fire revolver adopted by the British Army in 1867.

He obtained an ensigncy during the Crimea later exchanging his commission for Quartermaster, later serving in the Hampshire Militia, comprising Army Meritorious Medal inscribed Sgt Major David Jackson 90th Foot 1847, South Africa Medal dated 1853, Crimea Medal with Sebastapol Clasp, Turkish Crimea Medal dated 1855, Indian Mutiny Medal with Lucknow and Defence of Lucknow Clasps and their miniatures. A South African Medal to Sgt Jackson dated 1853 A/F and Crimea Medal 1854 A/F. Ribbons faded and some damage together with his appointment to Lieutenant dated 1868 under Seal and his appointment to Quartermaster under Seal dated 1856.
