Alfred Adrian Jones MVO (British, 1845-1938): A patinated bronze equestrian group of a huntsman and two houndspossibly cast by Elkington & Co.the seated rider blowing his horn, one hound leaping over a small fence, the other before the horse, on naturalistic rectangular base, the rear signed and inscribed AJA and ELKINGTON&CO,, 50cm high, 47cm wide, 23cm deep approximately overallFootnotes:Adrian Jones was a British sculptor and painter who specialised in the depiction of animals, in particular horses. Born in Ludlow, Shropshire, he studied at the Royal Veterinary College, London and in 1866 he qualified as a veterinary surgeon. The following year he enlisted in the Army as a veterinary officer in the Royal Horse Artillery with whom he served between 1867 and 1890. After an illustrious military career, travelling extensively and serving overseas, Jones retired in 1891 with the rank of captain. By this time, he was already active as an artist, having exhibited at the Royal Academy as early as 1884. In 1891 he married and moved to 147 Church Street, Chelsea where he built an art studio in the garden. In 1888 Jones received his first formal commission, to sculpt the outstanding racehorse Ormonde, a triple crown winner, from the Duke of Westminster. The quality and success of this first commission ensured that he attracted the patronage of other horse owners and he soon became nationally renowned as an equestrian sculptor of some of the Turf's greatest racehorses. His training as a veterinary surgeon also gave him a deep knowledge of equine anatomy which he used in his work with great success.Throughout the course of his artistic career Adrian Jones undertook many public monumental commissions, most notable of which is perhaps 'Peace descending on the Quadriga of War' on top of the Wellington Arch at Hyde Park Corner in London. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: * TP* VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium.TP Lot will be moved to an offsite storage location (Cadogan Tate, Auction House Services, 241 Acton Lane, London NW10 7NP, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue. A late Victorian ebony, palmwood and ivory inlaid display cabinetprobably by Gillow and Co. or Lamb of ManchesterWith ivory stringing, the central bevelled glass inset astragal glazed door enclosing two shelves, flanked by a pair of twin raised panelled quarter veneered and tablet inlaid doors, each enclosing one shelf, above a Greek key inlaid frieze, over a central bevelled glass inset astragal glazed door, enclosing one shelf, flanked by two raised panelled tablet inlaid and roundel centred doors, interspersed throughout with reeded pilasters, the Chubb lock plates stamped with serial numbers and also stamped: 'CHUBB PATENT, 128 QUEEN VICTORIA ST., ST. PAUL'S, LONDON', 110cm wide x 36cm deep x 172cm high, (43in wide x 14in deep x 67 1/2in high)Footnotes:ProvenanceThe offered lot previously belonged to the grandfather of the current owner and vendor. And it is thought by family repute that the great grandfather, Sir Charles Alexander Innes KCSI CIE(1874-1959), originally acquired this display cabinet at the end of the 19th century. Both of these forebears lived and worked in colonial India and Burma, where they were evidently central figures in the administrative running of the British Empire overseas. It seems highly likely that the present piece remained in imperial India until the country gained its independence in 1947, from which time onwards the cabinet evidently permanently returned to England with the family.Sir Charles Alexander InnesCharles Alexander Innes, who was born in Secunderabad, Hyderabad, went on to pass the Indian Civil Service exam in 1897 following an education at Merchant Taylors' School and St. John's College, Oxford. Charles travelled to the Madras Presidency where he was employed as a settlement officer in Malabar, in which capacity he also supplied material for The Imperial Gazetteer of India. Then he took up the role of Deputy Secretary to the Indian government. By 1916 Innes had been elected Director of Industries and Controller of Munitions in Madras. After World War I, Innes was appointed Foodstuffs Commissioner with the Indian government. In 1920, as secretary in the Commerce Department, one of his additional responsibilities was to oversee the functioning of the railways. During the following year, Charles Alexander was made Head of the Commerce Department. Two highlights from the period of his term were: the partition of the general finance budget from the railways budget and the foundation of a policy known as 'discriminating protection', the latter of which granted India more self-determination in the area of fiscal policy. The establishment of a Tariff Board of inquiries, which was of massive assistance to the rapidly expanding steel and iron industries in India, was also a policy accredited to Innes. This in turn set up the system which subsequently provided major support in terms of both arming and bolstering the allied forces during World War II. Having been honoured with the position of Governor of Burma in 1927, he went on to serve as such until 1932. Ultimately Charles Alexander was chairman of the Mercantile Bank of India between 1938 and 1952, after initially joining the Bank's board in 1933.Among the most significant distinctions bestowed upon Innes throughout his life were; Companion of the Order of the Indian Empire (1919 Birthday Honours) for services during the war; Companion of the Order of the Star of India (1921 Birthday Honours); and Knight Commander of the Order of the Star of India (1924 New Year Honours). In 1900 Sir Charles, who was actually descended from the Inneses of Drainie, married Agatha Rosalie, who was the daughter of Colonel Kenlie Stevenson of the Indian Army. Together they had four sons and one daughter. Their daughter Rosalie married Thomas Wynford Rees, the latter being Charles Alexander's private secretary during Innes's tenure as Governor of Burma. During much of his career Rees served as a highly decorated officer in the British Indian Army but eventually progressed to attain the rank of Major General.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Alexander_InnesThe item within this lot containing ivory has been registered in accordance with the Ivory Act (Section 10). Lot 134

Spain & Portugal. Nantiat (Jasper), A New Map of Spain and Portugal, Exhibiting the Chains of Mountains With their Passes The Principal & Cross Roads, With Other Details requisite for the Intelligence of Military Operations, William Faden, January 1st. 1810, large engraved map with contemporary hand colouring on four sheets, sectionalised and laid on linen, calligraphic title, table of the distances between towns, table of explanation and an 'advertisement' explaining the topography, slight staining and offsetting, each sheet approximately 570 x 785 mm, overall size if conjoined approximately 1130 x 1570 mm, contained in a contemporary marbled card slipcase with publisher's label to upper board, wear to extremitiesQTY: (1)NOTE:A large and detailed folding map, published during the Peninsular War. Probably because of the war, Nantiat is most exercised with the borders between Spain and Portugal, especially the passes through which it was expected that Napoleon's army might come when the campaign season started in the spring. It is probable that Faden saw an opportunity to sell this detailed and large-scale map to officers in Wellington's army in Portugal, with the idea that it could be used as a reference for the campaign. In July of 1810 - six months after the publication of the map - the French military commander, Marshal Masséna led an army of 65,000 troops into Portugal, pushing on towards Lisbon, but was held back by the Lines of Torres Vedras a set of earthworks that had been built on the orders of Wellington. The campaign - significant for the emergence of large-scale guerrilla warfare - was eventually won by the British under the command of Lt. Gen. Sir Arthur Wellesley, later the 1st Duke of Wellington. It could be argued that the French defeat was sealed when Napoleon set out with a massive army on what proved to be the disastrous French invasion of Russia. This seriously depleted the French forces with the result that a combined allied army under Wellesley pushed into Spain, defeating the French at Salamanca and taking Madrid. In the following year, Wellington scored a decisive victory over King Joseph Bonaparte's army in the Battle of Vitoria. Pursued by the armies of Britain, Spain and Portugal, Marshal Jean-de-Dieu Soult, no longer able to get sufficient support from a depleted France, led the exhausted and demoralized French forces in a fighting withdrawal across the Pyrenees during the winter of 1813/1814. France, Napoleon and its European dominance would finally fall the following year at the battle of Waterloo.

1st-2nd century A.D. A copper-alloy pyxis of architectural form, a column to each corner, and a bull's head to two of the sides; one side with a male head and the opposite side with a female head; the busts with rectangular recessed plaques below containing inscribed names: 'IVLIVS' and 'LVCIA'; domed lid with corded ribs rising from each corner towards the apex, bulbous finial, knop to each corner. See Rolland, H., Bronzes Antiques De Haute Provence, Paris, 1965, items 384, 385, for similar miniature altars, without lid. 70.6 grams, 53 mm high (2 1/8 in.). German art market, 1990s. Mr A.H., a North American collector living in the UK. This pyxis is most likely to have been an ink-pot or a cosmetic box. The fine manufacture, the precision of the details and the presence of male and female names indicate that it was probably intended as a marriage gift. The man was probably an army officer, considering that he is wearing armour and a corona civica, as military decoration. [A video of this lot is available to view on Timeline Auctions Website.]

Cf. Barron, A.E., Late Assyrian Arms and Armour, Art versus Artefact, Toronto, 2010; Borchardt, J., Homerische Helme: Helmenformen der Ág?is in ihren Beziehungen zu orientalischen und europäischen Helmen in der Bronze-und frühen Eisenzeit, Mainz, 1972, p.99 and pls.31, 32, 3; Gorelik, M., Weapons of Ancient East, IV millennium BC-IV century BC, Saint Petersburg (2003) in Russian; Dezs?, T., The Assyrian Army, I. The structure of the Neo-Assyrian army as reconstructed from the Assyrian Palace Reliefs and Cuneiform Sources, 2. This rare and wonderful helmet is an unusual (probably early) example of conical strap-helmet, linked with similar Greek strap helmets, but until now in the Near East, known only from the Assyrian reliefs. It is shown together with the crested helmets, on the reliefs of Tiglapilaser III and Sennacherib.

Lot 354

Late 5th-early 6th century A.D. A rare long seax, with a finely tapered blade with traces of battle nicks; boat-shaped cross followed by a broad tang pierced by an iron nail for the fastening of an organic hilt. Cf. Menghin, W., Das Schwert im Frühen Mittelalter, Stuttgart, 1983, item 8, Alamannic grave 71 from Pleidelsheim; cf. Archäologischen Landesmuseum, Die Alamannen, Stuttgart, 1997, p.221. 344 grams, 69 cm long (27 1/4 in.). Dutch collection, circa 2000. With Mr D.V.B., Netherlands, 2017. Property of a Sussex, UK, teacher. The sword and the long seax of the grave 71 from Pleidelsheim were produced most probably by a Danubian or Constantinopolitan workshop, as it is possible also for our specimen, based upon its guard. In the Eastern Empire, these long single-edged blades continued the tradition of the late Roman semispathae, and were used by Roman, Nomadic and Germanic warriors within and outside of the Roman army.

A cylinder-bellied jug with parallel circumferential grooves to the neck, slightly bulbous body and cylindrical central section, shoulder with radiating bands of ribbed panels, narrow foot with radiating ribbed bands and horizontal grooves; central circumferential frieze with inscription around heraldic medallion with the arms perhaps of the Order of Orange-Nassau on a shield with the motto 'PACE ET JUSTITIA' (Peace and Justice), and the initials I and E above, flanked by the inscription: 'LYFDEN GEIT BOVEN ALE DENCK NEIN SPRICKT DIE PENNINCK ICK BEN SOE LYF EN SOE WERT DAT IDER [MICK] GER[T]' Love goes before everything No, says the penny I am so dear and so precious That everyone wants me'. Cf. the Rijksmuseum, accession number BK-KDG-173, for similar vessel; Schmitz, 'Gres Limburgeois de Raeren' in Bulletin des Commissions d’art et d’archéologie, 20 (1881), 17ff., 51-2; Hellebrandt, H., Hugot, L., Mayer, O.E., Raerener Steinzeug / Fünfundzwanzig Jahre Grabungen im Raerener Land / Aachener Steinzeug. Band 4: Steinzeug aus dem Raerener und Aachener Raum, Aachen, 1977, pl.84; for the inscription see Kohnemann, M., Auslangen aus Raeren Steinzeug, Raeren, 1982, p.238. 650 grams, 19 cm high (7 1/2 in.). With Christie's Christie’s, Auction 5347, British and Continental Ceramics, 26 Feb 1995, lot 66. Collection of M. Cummings, Lincolnshire, UK. In the second half of the 16th century, the Raeren potters developed a new revolutionary technical form variant. This form comprised a foot, a cylindrical middle part, a shoulder and a neck. The cylindrical middle part allowed the insertion of friezes or inscriptions on the jugs, together with the usual coat of arms and medallions, which decorated the jugs from the same period. Perhaps this series was made by Jan Emens in occasion of the Peace of Gent in 1577 A.D., when a medal similar to the 'medallion' on the jug was made to the order of the senior commanders of the Dutch army.
