[?]DUBOIS, Henry Leopold. The History of a French Dagger; An Anecdote of the Revolution. Translated from the French. London: Printed for the Author, 1828. 2 volumes, 12mo (195 x 115mm). (Occasional light spotting and staining.) Contemporary or [?]original paper-backed blue boards (spine of vol. I split from top to bottom, rubbed with slight loss). Provenance: The Arthur H. Clark Company, Cleveland, Ohio (very small bookseller`s label in corner of front pastedowns). FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH, although "British Fiction 1800-29 Database" states "No French original discovered" so the author`s claims that this is a translation may be spurious; indeed, there is a suspicion that the author`s name is a pseudonym and the writer is actually English. The author/translator is described as being "Late Surgeon of Cavalry in the Imperial Army." "The book struck me as depicting, in lively colours, such barbarous transactions as were unfortunately too common during the days of terror in Paris; and I found it interesting, from the continual hope the mind entertains of the final triumph of innocence and virtue" (from the Dedication). M`GAURAN, Edward. The Memoirs of Major Edward M`Gauran, (Grandson of Colonel Bryan M`Gauran, Baron M`Gauran of Talaha, in the County of Cavan, in the Kingdom of Ireland) An Ensign in General Loudon`s Austrian Regiment of Foot; Volunteer with Admiral Elphinstone on board the Russian Squadron, on his Expedition against the Turks; Cadet in the Honourable East-India Company`s Forces; Major in the Service of Portugal; and A Lieutenant in the British Army in America. London: Printed for and Sold by the Author, 1786. 2 volumes [see footnote], 12mo (170 x 98mm). (Occasional light staining.) Contemporary polished calf, spines gilt with red morocco lettering-pieces (extremities lightly rubbed). Provenance: Francis Enys (armorial bookplate). FIRST EDITION. Not in Sabin. The title page of volume one states the work to be "in three volumes." However, the publisher seems to have a change of heart since the title page of the second volume states "in two volumes", and ends with "Finis" and an air of conclusion. The British Library copy has 2 volumes. The author gives a perfunctory account of his passage to America: "Nothing extraordinary happened, except the loss of a sailor, who fell overboard and was drowned; a famous horse, called Stradler, the property of General Howe, was seized with the staggers, and obliged to be knocked on the head. We reached Boston a few days after the battle of Lexington and Concord ..." (vol. II, p. 189). (2)

During the years of his minority, the duchy was ruled by a regent, his uncle Friedrich Karl. In 1693, when Eberhard Ludwig was sixteen, the Holy Roman Emperor Leopold I proclaimed him duke in order to secure the duchy`s support for the Empire: strategically situated on the right bank of the Rhine, Württemberg represented a significant bastion for the Empire against the aggressive encroachments of Louis XIV`s France. Often popularly represented as a spendthrift and proto-absolutist ruler unduly influenced by his mistress and her family, the duke was typical of many of his peers - the rulers of the German princely states - in seeking to establish and increase the status of his duchy through overt magnificence, military expenditure and diplomatic manoeuvring. His uncle had created a standing army from Württemberg`s militia in the early 1690s and the duke capitalised on that initiative by increasing the size of the army: both men also raised regiments of Württembergers for the specific purpose of hiring them as mercenaries to other states. Although loyally allied to the Empire and the anti-French `Grand Alliance` during the War of the League of Augsburg (1688-97), the duke was ambivalent in his allegiance during the War of the Spanish Succession (1702-14) and periodically flirted with the idea of a French alliance in the hope of increasing his status; his appointment as Imperial Field Marshal in 1712 was made in order to secure his loyalty to the Empire. The ending of the war with France in 1714 left Württemberg in considerable debt and the duke without his desired enhanced political status. In the same year, though, hostilities between Venice and the Ottoman Empire began; Venice had hired Württemberger soldiers during an earlier war with the Turks and so, in October 1714, the Serene Republic approached the duke for a large contingent of men. In the event, the duke was out-manoeuvred by the Viennese court, his personal negotiations with Venice failed and the Württemberger soldiers ended up in Imperial service at far lower rates of pay than the Venetians would have paid. It is possible that this gun was cast in 1714 as part of the duke`s attempts to provide appropriately equipped forces for Venice. A colourful figure with considerable, if poorly focussed, ambition, Eberhard Ludwig failed in his principal aim: the establishment of absolute rule in a duchy with a fully funded army and genuine status within the Holy Roman Empire. The cultural achievements of his reign - the building of Schloss Ludwigsburg, for example - must be regarded as outweighing the military and political ones. See Wilson 1995.
