§ Zdzislaw Ruszkowski (1907-1991) Landscape from Ireland signed 'Ruszkowski' (lower right) oil on canvas 76 x 50cm Provenance: Sale; Christie's South Kensington, Thursday 11 May 2004, lot 93 Born on July 12, 1907, in Tomaszow, Poland, Zdzislaw Ruszkowski displayed an early affinity for art, no doubt influenced by his father - a painter, who took delight in bringing his son with him on painting expeditions. His formative years were marked by a deep curiosity and passion for painting, leading him to pursue formal education in the field of fine arts. Ruszkowski's academic journey took him to the Cracow Art Academy, where he honed his skills under the guidance of renowned Polish artists. In 1935, he travelled to Paris, where his work would take on a different character and became more explicitly influenced by masters including Titian, Van Gogh, Cezanne and Rembrandt – stylistically disparate, though linked by their dexterous handling of light and colour. It was during this period that Ruszkowski began to develop his unique artistic approach, characterized by a fusion of classical techniques with modern sensibilities. In 1939, interrupted by the outbreak of war, Ruszkowski joined the Polish army in France. Travelling across Europe by foot, Ruszkowski ultimately found himself in Scotland, where he met and married his wife, Jennifer McCormack. Following the war, Ruszkowski and his wife divided their time between London, Cornwall and his studio in Lyme Regis. Whilst he is, perhaps, not a well-known name today, during his lifetime Ruszkowski was able to support his family through his work as an artist, exhibiting alongside the London Group and being represented by galleries including the Leicester Galleries, Roland, Browse & Delbanco and Jablonsky Gallery.Ruszkowski's body of work is a testament to his mastery of various artistic genres. He was a versatile artist, equally adept at portraiture, landscape and still life painting. His signature style combined meticulous attention to detail with a profound emotional depth. Ruszkowski's use of colour and light was particularly noteworthy, as he skilfully captured the nuances of the human form, the grandeur of nature and the subtleties of everyday objects.

Lot 357

Vivien Gribble (1888-1932) Portrait of Sir Cedric Lockwood Morris oil on canvas 54 x 49cm Provenance: By descent to the artist's daughter Sale; Christie's South Kensington, Friday 5 June 1987 The present lot, a portrait of Sir Cedric Lockwood Morris, is thought to have been painted by Vivien Gribble between 1927 and 1932.The daughter of an artist mother and a High Sheriff father, Chelsea-born Gribble enjoyed a privileged childhood before journeying to Munich to commence her artistic career. Later, she would trace her mother’s footsteps as she enrolled at the Slade School of Art, where she trained under Noel Rooke. After serving in the Land Army, Gribble met her husband, Douglas Doyle-Jones, a barrister from a similarly wealthy background. In addition to owning Valley Farm in Higham, the couple also owned ‘The Pound’, which was left to Morris, a former tutor of Gribble, upon her death in 1932.Although she is today known for her delicate wood engravings, the bright patchwork palette of the present lot demonstrates the impact that Morris’ tutelage had on Gribble’s practice. There is a puncture from the abck of the canvas which you can see from hte front at the neck. There are stretcher lines at the top and bottom of the canvas with a small amount of cracking. There is also another faint line towards the lower section of the painting which may be the result of the canvas having been rolled at some point.

Lot 70

Raymond Duchamp-Villon (1876-1918), Petit Cheval, 1911, a Cubist black patinated bronze model of a standing horse mounted on an integral plinth base, signed and dated to the plinth 29 x 34 x 14cm It is tempting to believe that Raymond Duchamp-Villon (born Pierre-Maurice-Raymond Duchamp) was predestined to become an artist – his maternal grandfather was the noted painted and engraver, Émile Frédéric Nicolle, and three of his five siblings, Marcel Duchamp, Jacques Villon and Suzanne Duchamp-Crotti all forged successful careers as artists. Duchamp-Villon, however, had early ambitions to become a doctor and spent several years studying for his degree at the Sorbonne before a crippling bout of rheumatic fever forced him, in 1898, to withdraw from his studies. It was during this period of convalescence that Duchamp-Villon, encouraged by his brothers Jacques and Marcel, began experimenting with sculpture. The remarkable gifts of the self-taught sculptor were soon recognised and in 1902 and 1903 he was invited to show at the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, where he exhibited under the designation ‘Raymond Duchamp-Villon’ to distinguish his work from that of his brothers. By 1905, Duchamp-Villon was exhibiting at the Salon d’Automne and, just two years later, in 1907, his reputation had grown such that he was elected as jury member for the Salon’s sculpture section.Duchamp-Villon’s early experiments in sculpture were largely centred around the more naturalistic template of sculpture as dictated by Auguste Rodin. However, by the 1910s, as the world changed around him so, too, did his art. Alongside his brothers, Marcel and Jacques, from 1911 Duchamp-Villon became an important figure in the Section d’Or group, a collective of painters, sculptors, poets and critics associated with Cubism and Orphism. As one of the first artists to apply Cubist principles to three-dimensional objects, Duchamp-Villon became a hugely significant figure in furthering the Cubist ideals and aesthetic.Dated 1911, the present lot is a fascinating example of both the themes and techniques that became dominant in Duchamp-Villon’s later work – horses and geometry. Duchamp-Villon used the horse as the subject for several of his bronzes, for him, the horse was not only ‘animal’ but became a codified creature bound with concepts of power, war and modernity. In his Cubist visual language, Duchamp-Villon juxtaposes apparently binary ideas of the corporeal and the mechanical, where muscles become pistons and the skeleton becomes the chassis.Sadly, Duchamp-Villon died aged just 42 following a bout of typhoid which he contracted whilst serving as a medic for the French army during World War I. Though his life was tragically cut short, during his army service he was able to complete his most significant Cubist work, The Large Horse, which demonstrates a clear ambition to move away entirely from representative works towards pure, geometric abstraction. In good condition, noting the need for a clean.  No apparent foundry marks or edition numbers.  Date of casting unknown.
