WILLY TIRR (British/German, 1915-2000), Abstract in white, umber and black, oil on canvas, attribution to label verso, 86cm x 96cm. See Illustration. Tirr was born in Stettin, Germany in 1915, he settled in England having fled the Nazis in 1938 and after internment he joined the army and served in the Intelligence Corps. After the war he began teaching at Leeds College of Art and later became head of Leeds Polytechnic, now the Metropolitan University. Tirr experimented in various media and drew inspiration from the Yorkshire landscape. His work has been exhibited internationally.
