The battle is also notable as the French left 'the loot of a Kingdom' behind, thought to have been worth in the region of £1 million then. This and the large distance marched by Wellington that day allowed the French to withdraw relatively un-molested as the British fell on the baggage train, the ill discipline of which sent Wellington into a range, referencing in a letter to Earl Bathurst, Secretary of State for War, his famous 'scum of the earth' quote.
