India – Early Sikh Ranjit Singh 1835 by Victor Jacquemont in French two volumes - 1835^ 434 and 417 pages leather binding. Jacquemont travelled to India in 1828 and remained there for the rest of his life. While he was there he met Maharaja Ranjit Singh at Lahore in 1831. Jacquemont provides a fascinating account of the royal Sikh Durbar the Sikhs Akalis etc: [trans.] ‘.the Akalis or immortals are properly speaking Sikh faqirs. The sacred pool at Amritsar is their headquarters but they often spread themselves over the Punjab in large and formidable parties. Ranjit wisely turns their ferocity to his own advantage. He enlists them in his armies and employs them preferably against Mussalman enemies. He has at the moment 4000-5000 of them in the army which he maintains at Attock ready to march against another fanatic Syed. I have only seen two of them in the streets of Amritsar it was evening and the matches of their muskets hung ready lighted. I had never seen more sinister looking figures.’ He describes Ranjit Singh: ‘His right eye which remains very large his nose is fine and slightly turned up his mouth firm his teeth excellent. He wears a slight moustache which he twists incessantly with his fingers and a long thin beard which falls to his chest. His expression shows nobility of thought shrewdness and penetration and these indications are correct.’ A rare and early important account of the Sikh Kingdom in the life time of the great Ranjit Singh^ just published 4 years before his death

India and the Punjab – Sikh Wars – The life of John Nicholson^ soldier and administrator Written by Captain Trotter^ well known as a competent and attractive writer on Indian history^ published in 1897. Based on Private and Hitherto Unpublished Documents. With Portraits and Maps^ "The saviour of Delhi"^ Brigadier-General John Nicholson. Nicholson first served in Afghanistan^ where he was ambushed as a member of Ghazni`s garrison. Leading the trapped men^ Nicholson did not lose heart after "fighting against odds" for several days. After his captors transferred him to Kabul he successfully bribed his guards^ made his way to the British forces^ and returned to India^ where he served in a variety of capacities. Beginning 1851 he spent five years as "as an administrative officer at Bannu^ being promoted brevet lieutenant-colonel on 28 November 1854. The character of his frontier administration was remarkable. He reduced those regarded as the most ungovernable people in the Punjab to such a state of order and respect for law that in the last year of his charge there was no crime of murder or highway robbery committed or even attempted. Lord Dalhousie spoke of him at this time as `a tower of strength`. Sir Herbert Benjamin Edwardes thought him as fit to be commissioner of a civil division as general of an army". Nicholson distinguished himself greatly during the Rebellion of 1857^ and commanded the main storming-party in the assault of Delhi where^ "Conspicuous at the head of his men"^ he was shot through the chest. 383 pages of a rare account of a soldier who served in the British Army during the Sikh wars.

(74 x 208 x 38cm.), Amethyst was laid down by Alexander Stephens & Sons on 25 March 1942, launched on 7 May 1943 and commissioned on 2 November 1943. Deployed mostly on anti-submarine patrols and escort duties, on 20 February 1945 she attacked and sank the U-boat U-1276 with depth charges (U-1276 had just sunk HMS Vervain). She is most famously associated however for her gripping encounter with the Chinese People`s Liberation Army. On 20 April 1949, Amethyst was on her way from Shanghai to Nanjing (Nanking) on the Yangtze River to replace HMS Consort, which was standing as guard ship for the British Embassy there due to the Chinese Civil War between the Kuomintang (KMT) and the Chinese Communists. Coming under sustained small arm and shell fire, she grounded and managed to transmit the signal "Under heavy fire. Am aground in approx position 31.10` North 119.50` East. Large number of casualties" before her power failed. Everyone capable of swimming to the safe south bank was ordered over the side, the remainder (about 40 unwounded, 12 wounded and 15 dead) were relieved when HMS Consort was sighted, flying seven White Ensigns and three Union flags, steaming down from Nanking at 29 knots. Consort came under fire from the shore batteries and returned fire with 4.5 inch (114 mm) guns, destroying the enemy shore batteries before she made a failed attempt to take Amethyst in tow. Lieutenant Geoffrey Weston refloated Amethyst on 22 April and moved her out of range of the PLA`s artillery. The British Naval Attache Lieutenant-Commander John Simon Kerans joined the ship later that day and assumed command. The ship remained under PLA guard until 30 July 1949 when Amethyst slipped her chain and headed downriver in the dark, beginning a 104-mile dash for freedom running the gauntlet of Communist guns on both banks of the river. She followed the merchant ship Kiang Ling Liberation, which showed the way through the shoals and distracted the PLA. At 0500 hours of 31 July, Amethyst approached the PLA forts at Wusong (Woosung) and Par Shan with their searchlights sweeping the river. The Amethyst, at full speed, broke through the boom at the mouth of the river, made contact with HMS Concord and transmitted the now-famous signal: "Have rejoined the fleet off Woosung...God save the King." She was broken up in 1956. **This model will be available for viewing at 6 Imperial Studios**
