Army of India Medal with Ava Clasp named to S Thornton, Commr. RN. Complete with original ribbon and pin. French Flag obtained in 1816 from the Waterloo Museum, Pall Mall, London. Comes with a copy of the Courier Newspaper Thursday Sept 5th 1816 advertising the exhibition which has been marked accordingly. The flag is wrapped is in a paper wrapping dated 1823. There is also a label which states "French Army retreat from Russia 1812". The flag itself is multipart sewn construction and measures 145cm x 97cm.

British Army Artillery Officers Sword with 82cm fullered single edged blade with etched decoration to Lt Col Ralph Peacock, XIX Lancashshire Volunteer Artillery. Retailer marked to J&W Wood, 74 King Street, Manchester. Shagreen wire bound grip. Overall length 98cm. Complete with scabbard. Appointed Hon. Col of the 2nd East Lancs Brigade in 1908. Lt Col Peacock was the eldest son of the famous Railway Engineer Richard Peacock.
WW1 Royal Flying Corps and early RAF interest. An outstanding group to 13412 Lt Stuart Leslie consisting of Army Book 425 Pilots Flying Log Book, first entry 29/11/17, final entry 24/10/18, posted to No 4 Squadron on 3/5/18 and saw active service until 24th October 1918 with over 260 hours total flying time both as a Pilot and Observer. The log entries are detailed and include such items as crash landings, number of rounds fired from the Lewis gun, number of bombs dropped, actions with enemy aircraft, anti aircraft fire, photos taken, etc. Also included are his Soldiers Small book dated with enlistment date of 30/10/15 at the age of 22 years. Next of Kin listed as Father, Henry Cliftonville Leslie: RFC Training Transfer Card with posting date 17/11/17, aircraft types flown, DH6, BE2e, RE8, BE2c, BE12. Background info: Stuart Leslie was born in Finchley, North London on 19th May 1893 to Henry Leslie and his wife Madeline Nora. He had three younger sisters. In 1911 he was listed in the census as being aged 18 and an "Apprentice, Trimmings, Haberdashery". After the Great War he returned to the family home "Cliftonville", Woodhouse Road, Finchley N12 and to the business. In 1939 he was living with his Mother and two sisters still at the family home and listed as being "Manager Straw and Felt Merchant". He never married and died in 1950.

John Francis Giradot (1829-1902) wearing a brown coat and blue stock Signed and dated A Orde/ 1902 middle left Watercolour on ivory 6cm x 4.5cm, oval In a gold frame, the glazed reverse with label inscribed Lt Col Girardot/ Survivor of the/ Birkenhead/ 2/ Mrs Alice Orde/ Inwoodbarn/ Tongham/ Surrey Provenance: Bonhams, London, Portrait Miniatures & Silhouettes, 28 September 2004, lot 186.Lt. Col. Girardot, son of Rev John Chaucourt Girardot and Sophia (née Chaplin) was born at Averham, Notts. He entered the Army in 1847. In 1852, he was in command of a detachment of the 43rd Light Infantry on board the troopship HMS Birkenhead that sank off the coast near Cape Town. Giradot was cast ashore with others on some driftwood and when this became entangled some distance from the shore he helped a soldier, who was unable to swim, by carrying him on his back. 436 lives were lost when HMS Birkenhead sank and only 207 survived, many due to the personal valour of Giradot. His letter to his father sent from Simon's Bay 1st March 1852 gives graphic details of the sinking and the loss of lives both by drowning and to sharks.He fought in the Kaffir War of 1852-53 including the expedition over the Orange River under General Cathcart and the battle of Berea. At the close of the Kaffir War he proceeded with the 43rd to Madras and Bangalore. He became Adjutant of the Sherwood Foresters Militia in 1856, retaining that position until 1875 retiring in 1880 with the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He was for many years a Justice of the Peace for Nottinghamshire.In 1894 he married Mary daughter of the late Mr James Evans of Trevanghan, County Carmarthen. He died on September 11th 1902, the year of the 50th Anniversary of the sinking of HMS Birkenhead and is buried in Rownhams churchyard Southampton. The Oxfordshire Light Infantry (formerly the 43rd) placed a memorial in the Royal Hospital Chelsea.This lot is sold together with clippings relating to Lt. Col. Giradot. Allan, Esq Thence by family descentDaryl Lindsay, prior to the Great War, had worked as a Jackaroo near Calbreni, New South Wales. On the outbreak of war in 1914 he (as did Victor Allan) enlisted in the Australian Army Service Corps. Later Lindsay worked as a driver in the Australian Army Service Corps in France serving there for almost 2 years. During that time he was encouraged to make drawings of life in the trenches. Allan clearly knew him well at this period, making references to him in his own war time diaries. (Australian Govt. Collection). In 1918 Lindsay was posted to Queen Mary's Hospital, Sidcup, Kent, as a specialist medical artist for the Australian Army. Here he met Henry Tonks who arranged for him to receive further training at the Slade School, London. Lindsay returned to Melbourne in 1919.Later in life Lindsay became Curator of the National Gallery of Victoria, rising to be Director from 1942-1956. He was knighted in 1965 for 'services to art'.
