(excluding upper two rings); 42.6 g.Footnotes:ProvenanceCollection of Maharani Jindan Kaur (1817-63), wife of Maharajah Ranjit Singh (1780-1839).Almost certainly sold by Frazer and Hawes from Garrards of Regent Street, London.Four pieces of jewellery from the Maharani in similar fitted cases have been sold at auction: Bonhams, Islamic and Indian Art, 30 March 2021, lot 123; Bonhams, Sikh Treasures and Arts of the Punjab, 23rd October 2018, lot200; Bonhams, Islamic and Indian Art, 24th April 2018, lot 300; and Christie's, Magnificent Mughal Jewels, London, 6th October 1999, lot 178.Between 1849 and 1850, when the British took control of the court in Lahore, they entered the Treasury, where they found the court jewels wrapped in cloth. The Treasury was fabled to be the greatest and largest treasure ever found. The most famous and well-known jewels were taken away as gifts for Queen Victoria, including the Koh-i Noor and the Timur Ruby. Confiscated treasures were sold by Messrs Lattie Bros. of Hay-on-Wye in the Diwan-i-Am of the Lahore Fort. The items were listed in seven printed catalogues and the sales took place over five successive days, the last one starting on 2nd December 1850. It is also known that some of the jewels were boxed in Bombay by Frazer and Hawes and were sent to London, where they were sold by Garrards. Judging by the age of the case, this would have been done after the Maharani's death.Maharani Jindan KaurMaharani Jindan Kaur was born in 1817 in Chahar, Sialkhot, Punjab. Of humble origins, she grew into a young lady of exquisite beauty and came to the attention of Maharajah Ranjit Singh at a young age. In 1835, she became Ranjit Singh's seventeenth wife and in 1838 bore him a son, Duleep. Duleep was his last child and just ten months later Ranjit Singh died. Jindan was the Maharajah's only surviving widow, rejecting the practice of 'Sati' or throwing herself on the funeral pyre with his other wives, choosing to bring up her young son instead.Ranjit Singh's empire stretched from the Indian Ocean to the Himalayas, with its southern boundary bordering British India. His court was fabled for its patronage of the arts and sciences, and for its riches. Immediately after his death, Ranjit Singh's golden empire began to crumble. His eldest son, Kharak Singh, took the throne but was murdered two years later; the reign of Sher Singh was similarly short-lived and he was assassinated in 1843 upon which the five year old Duleep was proclaimed Maharajah with his mother as Regent. As Jindan came to power, she was swiftly confronted by the British army in the hope of conquering one of the last independent states of Northern India. As Regent, Jindan became a thorn in the side of the East India Company: she waged two unsuccessful wars against the British, the First and Second Anglo-Sikh Wars of 1846-49, which brought about the annexation of the Punjab. In 1846 she was deposed and in February 1847 the British took possession of Lahore. The British continued to see her as a major threat and thus in August 1847, to halt her influence on the young king, Duleep was sent away from the palace and Jindan was incarcerated. In 1849 she escaped from captivity and fled to the Himalayas, where she found troubled sanctuary in Kathmandu, Nepal. Under pressure from the British officials at Kathmandu, the Nepalese imposed humiliating restrictions upon her; meanwhile, the British press began a campaign to blacken her name, calling her the 'Messalina of the Punjab'. Like Messalina, the wife of the Roman Emperor Claudius, Jindan was portrayed as a licentious seductress, who was powerful and influential and too rebellious to control. The young Maharajah, Duleep, was moved to Fategarh eventually to Britain in 1854, where he was adopted as a godson by Queen Victoria. He converted to Christianity and was brought up as a young English gentleman. In 1860, Duleep sought information about his mother and a report came back that: 'The Rani had much changed, was blind and lost much of her energy'. The Governor General agreed to a meeting based on this report of the Rani's condition, thinking that the last queen of the Punjab no longer posed a threat. When they met in 1861 Duleep found her almost blind and suffering from poor health. It was agreed that the Rani would travel to England: her private property and jewels, previously taken by the British authorities, would be restored to her on the basis that she left India. Upon their return to London, a change was noted in the Maharajah and he was heard to talk about his private property in the Punjab; information that only Jindan could have given to him. During this time, she reawakened her son's faith and royal heritage, sowing the seeds of discontent in his mind which would bring about his fall from grace in later life.On the 1st August 1863, Jindan died in her Kensington home in the country of her sworn enemy, just two and a half years after being reunited with her son and leaving him inconsolable. As a Sikh queen, cremation was the traditional practice, but one that was not allowed under English law. The Maharani's body was moved to the Dissenters Chapel at Kensal Green Cemetery until such time that it could be taken to India for the last rites. Her body remained at Kensal Green for nearly a year. At the time, Charles Dickens wrote: 'Down here... rests the Indian dancing woman whose strong will and bitter enmity towards England caused Lord Dalhousie to say of her, when in exile, that she was the only person our Government near feared'.In 1864, permission was granted to take the body to India and she was cremated at Bombay. In 1924, her ashes were later moved to Lahore and deposited at the samadh of Ranjit Singh. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 214

Six portraits of European officers and officials serving with the Sikhs Punjab, circa 1840-50gouache and gold on paper, each with white panel at top containing identifying inscription in Urdu in nasta'liq script, inner border with stylised intertwining motifs in gold on a dark blue ground, pink outer border with red margin rules, one inscribed Lawrence verso 240 x 153 mm. and slightly smaller(6)Footnotes:ProvenanceThe collection of Bryan Wilkins (1950-2021), son of Fraser Wilkins (1908-89), Inspector-General of the US Foreign Service 1964-71, US Ambassador to Cyprus 1960-64.The readings of the inscriptions, and hence the identifications of the sitters are not certain, given the difficulty of expressing unfamiliar European names in Urdu. The inscriptions (on five of the six) are as follows: A. shabih-i ajitan S-D-D-L sahib bahadur, 'Portrait of Adjutant [...] Sahib Bahadur'.B. shabih-i KH-S-B sahib bahadur, 'Portrait of Khosep [Joseph?] Sahib Bahadur'.A possible identification is Henri Joseph de Facieu, who is listed as the commander of a regiment in Ranjit Singh's army (see C. Grey, European Adventurers in Northern India, 1785 to 1849, Lahore 1929, p. 350). Jean-Louis Alexis de Facieu (1788-1843) was a French officer of cuirassiers who arrived in the Punjab in 1839 and enlisted in the service of the Lahore Durbar during the reign of Maharajah Kharak Singh. He held the rank of Colonel. (His son, Henry Joseph, served in the same regiment with the rank of Captain). He was accorded the honour of a full military funeral by the British authorities. His tomb still survives.C. shabih-i kaptan iklat sahib bahadur, 'Portrait of Captain Iklat [Quilette?] Sahib Bahadur'.This is probably a certain Quilette who is recorded as an instructor of Artillery in Ranjit Singh's army (see Grey, op. cit., pp. 350-351. D. shabih-i alaran sahib bahadur, Portrait of Alaran [Halloran] Sahib Bahadur'.This is probably the Irishman, Halloran, variations on whose name are found in records in connection with the army of Ranjit Singh (see Grey, p. 352). E. shabih-i dakthar sartand [?] sahib bahadur, 'Portrait of Dr. Sartand [Sergeant? Surgeon?] Sahib Bahadur.Three doctors are mentioned on the payroll of the Sikh army: the Transylvanian Johann Martin Honigberger, a Frenchman called Benet, and an Englishman called Harvey (see Grey, pp. 334-345).Six paintings, almost certainly from the same series (with the Urdu inscriptions within a panel, the same types of chairs, the distinctive striped carpets, the plain coloured backgrounds, and the same borders, were sold at Christie's, Art of the Islamic and Indian Worlds, 7th October 2008, lot 244. Two paintings, in a very similar style (featuring the same chairs), but with different background features, dated circa 1845, were sold at Christie's, Art of the Islamic and Indian Worlds, 10th April 2014, lots 182 and 183.Finally, for slightly different but related portraits of Sir Henry Fane (British Commander in Chief) and Frederick Currie (agent to the Governor-General, Lord Hardinge, and later Resident at Lahore), significant figures in British involvement with the Punjab, see Sotheby's, Arts of the Islamic World, 7th October 2015, lot 286. The model for such individual portraits may be larger works featuring a number of figures, such as the depiction of the signing of the Treaty of Bhairowal in December 1846, by a Punjabi artist, circa 1846-47, which depicts four English officers alongside the Sikh contingent (British Museum, 1948.10-9.0109; illustrated in S. Stronge (ed.), The Arts of the Sikh Kingdoms, London 1999, pp. 24-25, fig. 18).Lahore was full of European servicemen and adventurers. Davinder Toor, discussing a tulwar which once belonged to Colonel Francis Henri Mouton, who served with the Sikhs and took part in the Anglo-Sikh Wars, comments as follows:Mouton was among the last of a bevy of foreign (firangi) mercenaries and adventurers who travelled to Lahore in search of fame and fortune in the service of the Sikhs. The French contingent was particularly well represented. Besides Mouton, its cavalry officers included General Allard, Commander de la Roche, Mr Garron (or Carron), Messrs de Facieu (father and son) and Captain Argoud. The infantry wing was served by Captain de la Font, Mr Amise, Mr Dubuignon, Mr de la Ust and Mr Gervais, while General Court oversaw artillery operations. Finally, Dr Benet served briefly as Maharajah Ranjit Singh's medical physician and the surgeon-general of the Sikh army.Every one of them had to agree to certain pre-conditions of employment, including the growing of their beards, abstaining from eating beef, marrying locally and promising to remain loyal to the Sikh court, even if it meant going to war against their countrymen. Besides adopting a blend of European and Punjabi dress, many of them also chose to wear Punjabi-made weapons.(Davinder Toor, In Pursuit of Empire: Treasures from the Toor Collection of Sikh Art, London 2018, pp. 194-195).This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

SKETCHES of Portuguese life, manners, costume, and character / by A. P. D. G.- London: Geo. B. Whittaker, 1826.- XXV, [3], 364 p.: il.; 23 cm.- E., Rare title in the foreign bibliography on Portugal, whose author, who signs only with his initials, remains to this day unidentified. Of him it is known only that he served in the British army in Lisbon and accompanied the royal family in their retreat to Brazil. The 20 aquatints (plus an engraving with musical notation of a modinha, with foxing), hand-coloured, which illustrate the edition, mainly represent customs and scenes of daily life in Lisbon and Rio de Janeiro and present a caricature and satirical nature. Copy with the half-title missing, as in most known copies, a little cropped, with the detriment of the marks (of the plates) of some engravings, on the outer edge. Engravings sometimes with small stains on the same outer edge (fore edge); modinha print with foxing. Occasional small stains and slight offset (contact transfer) to the adjacent sheets, caused by the colour of the prints. Good contemporary binding, full in crushed morocco, made in the United Kingdom, with a beautiful gold ornamental border on the covers (vines and bunches of grapes) and finished with blind tooling decoration; roll on the squares and in the thickness of the covers; panels gold closed on the spine (with slightly weak joints). Duarte de Sousa, 3. Tooley, 453. Foulché-Delbosc, 255.

BRADFORD, Rev. William.- Sketches of the country, character, and costume, in Portugal and Spain, made during the campaign, and on the route of the British Army, in 1808 and 1809. / Engraved and coloured from the drawings by the Rev. William Bradford...- London: printed for John Booth, by William Savage, 1810.- [2], 38 f.: [1, 40] gravuras color.; 36 cm.- E., together with: -----.- Sketches of military costume in Spain and Portugal. Intended as a supplement to the Rev. Mr. Bradford's Sketches of country, character, and costume, in Portugal and Spain.- London: printed by William Savage, for John Booth, 1810.- [2], 8 p.: [13] gravuras coloridas; 36 cm.- E., The Reverend William Bradford (1780-1857) was a military chaplain and accompanied Wellington's forces in the Peninsular campaign against Napoleon's troops. His drawings were perfected and engraved by J. Clark to illustrate one of the most beautiful books on Portugal and Spain published in the 19th century. Variant of the 1809 edition, containing both parts in English. The first part (Sketches of the country...) is illustrated with a monochromatic frontispiece, copperplate print (etching and stipple) and 40 hand-coloured aquatints, representing, above all, popular costumes and views of localities. The second part (Sketches of military costume...), with its own title page, includes 13 aquatints, also hand-coloured, with Portuguese, French and Spanish military uniforms. The engravings exactly match the index (List of plates) that appears on the second sheet (after the main title page). Clean copy, slightly cropped (marbled edges). The plates have great freshness and the original cellophane separators. 19th century binding, full crushed sheepskin, with light wear, triple gold fillet and blind tooling roll, squared on the covers and golden roll on the squares, with new endpapers in plain wrought paper. Duarte de Sousa, 102 (for the 1809 edition). Tooley, 107.

CUMBERLAND JUNIOR, George.- Views in Portugal and Spain, taken during the campaign of His Grace the Duke of Wellington / by G. Cumberland, Jun.- London: Printed by William Nicol, 1823.- [3], 20 [i.é 19] litografias color.; 27x37 cm.- E., The author, of whom little is known, should not be confused with his father and namesake (1754-1848), an English writer, poet and collector, who was part of William Blake's circle of friends and to whom the work is usually attributed. In fact, it is known that Cumberland (son) accompanied Wellington on his Iberian campaign “...and produced a beautiful book of watercolour illustrations in 1823 called Views in Spain and Portugal” (see Cumberland Family, www.manfamily.org), while his father never visited the Peninsula. The title was taken from the gilt engraving of the upper cover, as the title page was never printed. It was, however, printed on a label which in some copies is glued on a protective cover (not printed) and which the present copy does not have. The edition had a print run of only 100 copies, each consisting of three pages with the explanation of the prints and 19 hand-coloured lithographs (the last print is wrongly numbered with nº 20). According to the «Description of the views» (p. 1), the set includes the following prints: I - The Aqueduct...; II - View of the Duke of Wellington’s lines covering Lisbon...; III - ... the principal entrance to a small church at Golegã; IV - Tomar; V - A fountain in Elvas; VI - A view of Elvas, with the aqueduct, and Fort La Lippe; VII - North view of Elvas...; VIII - Badajos...; IX - Porta-legre...; X - The Army crossing the Tagus at Villa Velha...; XI - Castello Branco, with the Serra de Estrella...; XII - Celorico...; XIII - Panoramic view from the Castle of St. Sebastian; XIV - Palace of San Ildefonso...; XV - Palencia...; XVI - Santander...; XVII - Vitoria...; XIX - View of the river Douro at Toro... Excellent copy, signed by the author, very clean and with large margins. Full morocco binding, with gold tooling on the squares and magnificent moirée silk doublures, signed “bound by Zaehnsdorf, London, England”. Francisco de Saldanha da Gama Ferrão de Castelo Branco' Bookmark (nº 246 of the catalogue nº 43 of Soares & Mendonça, prepared by bookseller Manuel Ferreira). Lot 299 at Silva’s/Pedro de Azevedo auction, May 2000 (same copy). Duarte de Sousa, 201.

[L'EVEQUE, Henry].- Campaigns of the British Army in Portugal, under the command of General The Earl of Wellington.- London: Published by W. Bulmer & Co., and published (for the proprietor) by Messrs. Colnaghi and Co., 1812.- [6], 18 p.: 1 retrato, [1], 17 gravuras; 57 cm.- E., Henry l'Évêque (1769-1832), painter, miniaturist, watercolorist and above all engraver, born in Geneva, was part of a group of artists who, following the French Revolution, roamed Europe accompanying the armies in campaign, recording for the posterity the most famous battles of the Napoleonic wars. Complete copy, consisting of a title page, a portrait of Wellington, next to the title page (To His Most Excellent Magesty the Emperor of All the Russias, this portrait of Field Marshal His Grace the Duke of Wellington..., dated 1814), two preliminary sheets (author's dedication to Wellington, and list of subscribers), one sheet with a description of the Prince Regent's departure to Brazil, in 1807, and respective engraving, 18 text pages (numbered) with descriptions of the 17 engravings found at the end of the volume. The 17 large-format (41x57 cm) copperplate prints (numbered) represent scenes of battles and troop movements during the Peninsular War. Prints with very slight browning, almost always confined to the margins, preserving the cellophane separators. Recent binding, fully shagreen (probably from the Ricardo Espírito Santo Silva Foundation Workshops), with gilt ornamental borders, closed panels on the spine and roll on the squares; protective case. LANDMANN, George.- Historical, military and picturesque observations on Portugal, illustrated by seventy-five coloured plates, including authentic plans of the sieges and battles fought in the Peninsula during the late war.- London: T. Cadell and W. Davies, 1818.- 2 vols.: il.; 37 cm.- E., The author (1779-1854) was a lieutenant colonel in the British Army, with equal military rank in the Spanish Engineering Corps. The first volume aims to provide an overview of the history of Portugal, while the second seeks to convey a wide range of local information that may be useful, on the one hand, for military purposes, and on the other, to travelers and other readers. . The edition can be considered as one of the largest typographic companies, in its style and one of the most beautiful books in the foreign bibliography on Portugal, in the 19th century. The first volume (XIV, 607 p.) is illustrated with four hand-coloured watercolours, representing as many degrees of torture by the Inquisition, two numismatic engravings and 14 watercolour maps and plans of cities and troop movements. The second volume (XVI, 203 p.) includes another 55 beautiful aquatints from Portuguese localities, as well as a double engraving of Alcácer do Sal, not registered in the index, but referred to by Tooley as nº 25. All engravings are hand-coloured and of great aesthetic effect, some being doubles. In general, they are all very clean, fresh and neatly folded. A few pages of text with very slight moisture stains not affecting the engravings. Contemporary green morocco half-bindings with covers covered with a canvas similar to the spine and new endpapers. The copies rarely appear on the market, especially when complete like this one. Provenance: lot 353, from Silva's/Pedro de Azevedo auction, April 1993; lot 432 of the Silva’s/Pedro de Azevedo auction, March 2000, (same copy). Tooley, 291 (The most beautiful illustrated book on Portugal of the period). Duarte de Sousa, 398.
