John Smart - A Lady, wearing a ribbon in her hair and blue trimmed white gown, signed with initials JS, dated 1786 and inscribed I, ivory, oval, 5.2 x 3.8cm, in gold frame with bright cut reverse centred by a glazed oval This ravishing portrait was painted shortly after Smart's arrival in India. Having obtained permission of the East India Company, he and his daughter Anna Maria sailed on the 19th April 1785 on board the "Dutton" bound for Madras. On arrival they took up residence in North Street, Fort St George. He enjoyed the patronage of the Nawab of Arcot, government officials, army officers and many of the English residents. Much of Smart's finest work dates from the ten years he spent in India. The unknown sitter's fashionable dress is closely similar to those of Lady Oakley and Charlotte Porcher who sat to Smart in India in 1786 and 1788 respectively. See Foskitt (Daphne) John Smart the Man and his Miniatures, plt XVIII. In a fine state of preservation
