John Anthony Conner (American, 1892-1971)A still desert landscape strewn with scrub, before distant dusky mountains, oil on board, signed, in moulded gilt frame, 43 cm x 53 cm overall[ Conner was born and raised in Illinois and served in the US Army during World War One before relocating to California. He drew inspiration from Los Angeles scenery and went on to pursue a career in the art department of MGM (Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc), amongst several other motion picture studios, garnering respect for his impressionist depictions of desert landscapes. ]
Idi Amin Dada Oumee (1925-2003), military officer and former President of Uganda from 1971-79, a rare signed photograph of Amin seated in a three quarter length pose wearing his army uniform and cap, mounted on what appears to be a menu card cover, with a caption printed onto a card affixed beneath the image, signed in between the two in blue biro 'Idi A. Dada', photograph 25cm high, 20cm wide, mounted, framed and glazed in a large, heavy walnut veneered frame, frame 87cm high, 77cm wide.Condition: Photo appears to be a somewhat faded in terms of colouring. Some patches of brown spotting. Deckle edged card backing has dents to corners and edges, and some brown staining. First commissioned woman in the British Army.- Bennett (Agnes, Australian medical practitioner, of 36 Morpeth Mansions, London, 1872-1960) Diary excerpts sent to her brother during the First World War and some wartime correspondence etc. 1916-17, 8 parts, typescript with autograph corrections, numerous pp., some loose, others working loose, original wrappers, edges chipped and torn, 280 x 210mm., n.d. [c. 1916-17]; and a copy of the printed book, Doctor Agnes Bennett, by Cecil & Celia Manson, 1960, v.s., v.d. (9). *** The excerpts cover the years 1916-17 when Bennett was in charge of a unit of the Scottish Women's Hospitals on the Serbian front. "I went to Salonique on Thursday, 18th, and returned on 20th. I fear some disaffection in the army. They are thoroughly discontented with French authority and there are rumours of a plot against the Crown Prince - one can hardly think there would be a party to go over to the Germans, but really the pressure on them is terrible." - Bennett.

The work is dedicated to Bartolomeo d'Alviano, a mercenary commander of the Venetian forces, who distinguished himself in March, 1508 with the defeat of the Imperial Army of the Holy Roman Emperor Maximillian I. Provenance: 'Dono di D. Fortunato Federici' (18th century ink inscription to front free endpaper within a later ink bibliographical note); 'Purchased from M. Morton-Smith, Dec. 1959' (pencil note and cutting of the catalogue entry to rear endpaper); thereafter remaining with our vendor.
