[WORLD WAR I]: EDWARD VIII (1894-1972) King of the United Kingdom January - December 1936. Later Duke of Windsor. A fine autograph manuscript, unsigned, four pages, 4to and slightly smaller, n.p. (London), n.d. (July 1919). The boldly penned holograph manuscript, with a number of corrections, is the draft of a speech made by the Prince of Wales at a dinner in honour of Marshal Foch following the end of World War I and states, in part, 'This is an occasion of such unique & historical interest that I find it very difficult to address such a so distinguished an assembly. It is indeed a great honour for me to be presiding here this evening & that it should fall to my lot to propose such a wonderful toast; it is almost impossible for me to find adequate words……to welcome so many famous allied commanders…..At this dinner are gathered together, comrades in arms drawn from many nations…..who have been engaged in a long & desperate (sic) struggle against the most powerful military combination that the World has ever known & who have emerged from the struggle completely victorious……France & Paris have already celebrated peace & our overwhelming victory; the other allied nations & their capitals will doubtless do the same. But just now we are celebrating it all in the British & London way & I feel that yesterdays triumphal pageant was a brilliant success. We feel that it represented the great war, that it represented victory in every sense of the word & that no one who was present could fail to carry away but the proudest & most inspiring memories which will last a life time……To me as one of the younger generation these memories will be specia particularly vivid as during my periods of active service in several theatres of war I often had the priviledge (sic) & good fortune of being closely associated with many of our allied armies army corps divisions & even regiments…….It is obvious that this last greatest of world struggles has broken all records from every point of view but I would venture to point out that never before has so large a number of allies been fighting & working together…..Now that the great war is over & the powerful enemies that have so long disturbed the peace of the World & menaced our freedom are finally overthrown & subdued we all rejoice to welcome here those who have shared with us the perils & sufferings of the trying & strenuous campaign & who now share with us the joy of our victory. Representative of every allied power are present this evening but there is one power whose representative has occupied a unique position. In Marshall (sic) Foch we salute the great captain…..His position as a Supreme C. in C. has no comparison in history either from the point of view of power or responsibility. In this position he has revealed a genious (sic) for war equal to the greatness of his task & the magnitude of his difficulties'. Together with a further selection of holograph notes, unsigned, four pages, oblong 4to and 8vo, n.p. (London), n.d. (July 2019), being the Prince's briefer manuscript notes prepared in composing his speech, with various corrections and the different sections each marked with an ink and blue indelible pencil line, the notes concluding with a passage in French, 'C'est pour moi un tres grand honneur et tres grande joie de vous acceuillir ici au nom du Roi et de boire a la sante des grandes nations allies dont vous etes les representants distingues Je n'ai qu'une pensée ce soir "vive nos braves allies"' and his Toast to Foch, 'The Commanders & representatives of the armies forces of our allies coupled with the name of Marshall (sic) Foch'. A rare manuscript with interesting content. A few slight stains and minor age wear to the preparatory notes, the manuscript speech VG, 2 Ferdinand Foch (1851-1929) French Marshal, a General and military theorist who served as the Supreme Allied Commander from March 1918.  The 'triumphal pageant' which the Prince of Wales describes as having taken place the day before in the present manuscript was undoubtedly the Victory Parade Peace Day held in London on 19th July 1919. Although fighting on the Western Front had ceased in November 1918, peace negotiations would continue for many months and the Treaty of Versailles was not signed until June 1919. When negotiations were reaching their conclusion and a 'proper peace' was within sight, a peace committee was founded to decide how Great Britain would publicly mark the end of World War I and acknowledge the widespread feelings of jubilation within the country.  With a Bank Holiday having been agreed upon, on the morning of the 19th July thousands of people gathered in London to participate in a spectacle, the likes of which had not been witnessed before. Almost 15,000 troops participated in the victory parade which was led by the Allied commanders Douglas Haig (British Commander-in-Chief), John Pershing (Head of the United States Expeditionary Force) and Ferdinand Foch (Allied Supreme Commander). The latter received the honour of being created a Field Marshal in the British Army on the same day and was evidently honoured at a dinner the next evening when the Prince delivered his speech. A monument to those killed and wounded, designed by Edwin Lutyens, was unveiled in Whitehall to mark the end of the victory parade. Although it was a temporary construction, another made from Portland stone and designed by Lutyens was to replace it in 1920 and, known as the Cenotaph, still stands today.

[NATAL - CONGELLA INCIDENT]: SMITH THOMAS CHARLTON (1794-1883) British Captain, noted for his defence of Port Natal (Durban) during the Congella Incident of May-June 1842. An interesting A.L.S., T C Smith, three pages, 4to, Fort Cox, 25th August 1846, to Lieutenant Colonel Cloete. Smith informs his correspondent that the return he requires has been harder to accurately complete than first anticipated ('with the regulars it is “plane sailing” obtaining the information wanted, but it is far otherwise with the Burghers - composed as they are of all classes & colours in the community'), also referring to Sir Andries Stockenstrom ('he was too great a personage to send in returns or reports of any kind'), further continuing 'The dispatch from Hogg will interest all parties at Head Quarters - he has done much and I think will do much more & it is just the person for the service he has been sent on' and commenting on other individuals, one who 'has been secured as a prisoner' and a Mr. Flynn whose conduct 'seems to have been strange' and whose functions should be suspended, explaining 'The fact is our diplomatic agents have been left too long at their several posts & have become so accustomed to Caffre diplomacy that they have become half Caffre themselves'. Smith also writes of other military attacks and matters, not all of them in a favourable manner, commenting 'The account you give of the state of your draught oxen is by no means encouraging as regards further movements - here they are dying at a handsome average daily……and the only consolation is that the Caffres themselves appear to be suffering and would apparently be glad of a termination to the conflict…..Of the movements of “the great man of the party” - Sir A - we know nothing……In your opinion of the erratic operations of the ex-Lieut Governor I fully concur'. In a postscript written to the edges of the integral address leaf Smith refers to 50,000 rounds of ammunition at Fort Cox which are due to be transported to Cloete's division and enquires as to how they should be forwarded. The address panel bears a small red wax seal and there is a small area of paper loss caused by the original breaking of the seal. Together with a further interesting A.L.S. by an unidentified representative of the Governor in Cape Town, three pages, folio, Colonial Office, Cape Town, 12th August 1842, also to Lieutenant Colonel Cloete. The letter is written on behalf of the Governor and acknowledges receipt of a number of Cloete's letters, dated between June and August, as well as their accompaniments 'detailing the operations which, in conformity with His Excellency's instructions……were carried into effect by you for reinforcing Captain Smith, for re-establishing the supremacy of the British authority in the neighbourhood of Port Natal, and for bringing the rebellious Emigrant farmers to subjection by compelling them to acknowledge their allegiance to the Queen', continuing to add that, after careful perusal of the reports and anxious consideration of the circumstances, His Excellency 'is of opinion that your proceedings were in strict accordance with the spirit of your instructions & that the main objects of the expedition, viz the suppression of the revolt and the establishment of the Queen's authority having been effected, it became expedient and necessary to prevent the further effusion of blood by extending towards the rebels a leniency to which their violent conduct and determined hostility gave them little title to expect', and further stating that His Excellency wishes to express his conviction 'that, under the peculiar circumstances of the case, no other line of conduct could have been pursued…..' Two letters of fine content and association relating to the Congella Incident. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, otherwise VG, 2  Abraham Josias Cloete (1794-1886) Afrikaner General in the British Army. In 1842 Cloete was sent with reinforcements from Cape Town to relieve a small force under Captain Thomas C. Smith of the 27th (Inniskilling) Regiment of Foot which was besieged by insurgent Boers near Port Natal (now Durban). Cloete's firm action not only avoided a battle, but pathed the way for a permanent settlement of the subsequent Natal Colony. He later served as Quartermaster-General in the Xhosa Wars of 1846.  Andries Stockenstrom (1792-1864) British Politician & Colonial Administrator, Lieutenant Governor of British Kaffraria 1836-38.  In 1846 Captain W. S. Hogg, whose dispatches are referred to in Smith's letter, had led an expedition against the Tembu chief Mataga and in the same year commanded the Hottentot Levies during the Xhosa Wars.George Thomas Napier (1784-1855) British Lieutenant-General, Governor and Commander-in-Chief of the Army in the Cape Colony 1839-43 during which time the abolition of slavery and the expulsion of the Boers from Natal were the main events.

Gordon further outlines his upcoming travel arrangements and suggests meeting Newsome at Suffolk Street, reflecting 'It seems to me 14 or 15 years since I left Gravesend, time hangs so in the country and for my life I dare not give away a trait' and concludes by remarking that he expects to receive a long letter containing the interview with Jervis before long, although if it is not yet written to not mind and wait until until Friday 'when we will get it over in a minute, and go to the W.O. together'. Attractively matted in ivory with decorative borders beneath a colour reproduction image of a painting of Cetshwayo by Karl Rudolf Sohn and framed and glazed in a modern wooden frame to an overall size of 11.5 x 13.5. Together with a large portion of a 12mo envelope which originally contained the signature, annotated in fountain pen ink 'Cetywayo's signature…..Given by Col. Hassard'. Autographs of Cetshwayo are extremely rare in any form. One very small, extremely minor stain just above one letter of the signature, VGColonel Charles Fairfax Hassard (1822-1900) British Army officer who commanded the Royal Engineers in South Africa and served as second in command to Frederic Thesiger, 2nd Baron Chelmsford, during the Anglo-Zulu War. Hassard was Cetshwayo's gaoler when the Zulu chief was held captive at Cape Town. Provenance: The present signature was formerly part of the Ray Rawlins collection of autograph letters and historical documents and is illustrated in his Guinness Book of World Autographs (1977). The signature was sold by Sotheby's in their sale of the Rawlins collection on 2nd, 3rd & 4th June 1980 (lot 298, Estimate £100-150, Hammer price £180) and has not appeared on the market since. We have been unable to locate any other signature, letter or document of Cetshwayo as ever having previously appeared at auction.

[SOONG MAY-LING]: (1898-2003) Madame Chiang Kai-shek. First Lady of the Republic of China 1948-75. T.L.S., Mayling Soong Chiang, in facsimile, two pages, 4to, Hankow, Hupeh, 26th September 1938, to '1917 and other Wellesley Friends', on the printed stationery of the Headquarters of the Generalissimo. Madame Chiang states that she is sending her correspondents a book (no longer present) which has just come off the press and is 'a souvenir and record of what has happened in China this past year', continuing, in part, 'Most of the articles were composed under great pressure….and therefore they are not well written. The Publicity Department edited and printed this edition without my knowledge…..I did not see this book until after it was printed. I did, however, choose the cover - and as it was then about Reunion I chose our class colour - cornflower blue. The autographed copies I am sending you are of interest because some of the imperfections are due to the unusual difficulties we are undergoing in Hankow owing to war conditions. At this writing the Japanese army is only 100 miles from Hankow, but we are still here and shall remain, even if doing so means hanging on by the skin of our teeth. We are making the enemy pay dearly for every inch of our territory they are scorching……For the honor of the Wellesley English Department, however, I must disclaim authorship of the article entitled “Upbringing of Children of Revolutionary Martyrs”……One of my friends just yesterday called my attention to it by remarking that “it smacks of chop-suey, flavored with Maggi sauce, and cooked by a Main Street bride from a random recipe given her by a tourist cousin.” When I read it I felt that she was quite justified in making such a caustic comment, although I myself could not burst out laughing at some of the purple patches. Please laugh with me……Let me thank you for helping the war orphans now christened “Warphans”. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, VG The present letter is dated during the Second Sino-Japanese War 1937-45.
