Jodl signs his last statement before being sentenced ‘I shall leave this courtroom with my head held as high as when I entered it’ JODL ALFRED: (1890-1946) German General of World War II, Chief of the Operations Staff of the Armed Forces High Command. Jodl signed the unconditional surrender of the Third Reich as the representative of the then President Karl Donitz in 1945. Jodl was found guilty on all four counts at the Nuremberg Trials and sentenced to death and executed in 1946. An important D.S., A. Jodl, three pages, 4to, Nuremberg, n.d. (31st August 1946), in German. The mimeograph document, featuring several holograph corrections, is the typescript of Jodl's final statement delivered at the Nuremberg Trials in August 1946 and states, in part, 'Mr. President, may it please the Tribunal, it is my unshakable belief that later historians will arrive at a just and objective verdict concerning the higher military leaders and their assistants, for they, and the entire German Wehrmacht with them, were confronted with an insoluble task, namely, to conduct a war which they had not wanted, under a commander-in-chief whose confidence they did not possess…. And all this, in the complete and clear realization that this war would decide the life or death of our beloved fatherland….As far as I am concerned, I believe that no man can do more than to try to reach the highest of the goals which appear attainable to him. That, and nothing else, has always been the guiding principle for my actions, and for that reason, Gentlemen of the Tribunal, no matter what verdict you may pass upon me, I shall leave this courtroom with my head held as high as when I entered it many months ago. But whoever calls me a traitor to the honorable tradition of the German Army, or whoever asserts that I remained at my post for personal and egotistical reasons, him I shall call a traitor to the truth. In a war such as this, in which hundreds of thousands of women and children were annihilated by layers of bombs, or [were] killed by low-flying aircraft, and in which partisans used every-yes, every single means of violence which seemed expedient, harsh measures, even though they may appear questionable from the standpoint of international law, are not a crime in morality, or in conscience. For I believe and avow that a man's duty toward his people and fatherland stands above every other. To carry out this duty was for me an honor, and the highest law. May this duty be supplanted in some happier future, by an even higher one, by the duty toward humanity'. Boldly signed by Jodl at the conclusion. An extremely rare and historic document. Two ink blots to the first page, slightly affecting two words of text, and with small staple holes to the upper left corner of each page and some small tears to the edges, not affecting the text or signature, otherwise about VG

§ William Scott (British, 1913-1989) Table top still life signed lower left "W Scott" gouache 26 x 37cm (10 x 14in) Provenance: Given by William Scott to the sculptor William Redgrave (1903–86); (Bill) Redgrave and his wife Mary in St. Ives, Cornwall; sold by Mrs Mary Redgrave to the present owner's mother, and thence by descent Other Notes: William Scott was born at Greenock, Scotland and studied at Belfast College of Art and later at the Royal Academy between 1831 and 1935. His time spent in France in the late 1930s inspired him to paint still lifes which were more traditional than his table top still lifes of the 1950s, which saw him working in a more abstract manner. Whilst serving in the Army from 1942 to 1946 Scott painted watercolours of soldiers and the local landscape. Scott returned to painting in earnest in 1946, concentrating on still-lifes of pots and saucepans, eggs, fishes and bottles on a bare kitchen table - simple objects chosen for their contrasting shapes.
