During the war, Gulab Singh stayed aloof which helped the British victory, and even became prime minister of the Sikh Empire for the last 38 days of conflict. Finely painted with the beautiful Lin Siniang examining the sharpness of her sword, holding it up with one hand and testing the blade with the index finger of her other hand. She is wearing loose-fitting robes and finely decorated aprons, as well as a chime necklace and floral headdress, with a second sword tied to her back.Inscriptions: Lower left, 'Bingfu Qiu Ying'. One seal, 'Shizhou'. Provenance: US market, by repute from a private collector in Texas, USA.Condition: Good condition with old wear, some stains, shallow surface scratches, minor soiling, few small creases. Laid down on board and framed.Dimensions: Image size 66.5 x 31.5 cm, Size incl. frame 94 x 45.5 cmThe story of Lin Siniang is a legend of the early Qing dynasty. Lin was taught by her father how to yield a sword from a young age. By the age of six, she wielded the weapon with deadly precision. To support herself when her family died, she had to turn to prostitution and subsequently caught the attention of Zhu Changshu, a feudal lord of the Qingzhou state. The king was so impressed by her skills that she was asked to teach all his concubines. Eventually, these women became a full-fledged army led by Lin Siniang. When Changshu was captured by rebel forces, it was Lin and her army that rescued him. Sadly, they died in battle but were given heroes' burials. A MASSIVE SILVER-INLAID BRONZE CENSER, SHISOU MARKChina, 17th-18th century. The heavily cast bombe body supported on a spreading foot and rising to a slightly everted rim, the shoulder set with two loop handles, the exterior finely inlaid in silver wire with sinuously coiled dragons dividing capitals in the form of lotus flowers reminiscent of the Old Summer Palace (yuanmingyuan). The base with a silver-inlaid two-character Shisou mark.Provenance: The Mee-Din and Robert W. Moore Collection. Robert W. Moore is a famed California collector of Chinese and Korean art, whose passion began in the 1950s when he served in the US Army and was stationed in Korea. After his return to the United States, he began collecting Korean and later also Chinese works of art, and over the following decades became a very knowledgeable, discerning, and influential collector.Condition: Very good condition with only minor wear and casting irregularities, minuscule nicks, light scratches, the interior with extensive traces of use. Shisou is listed there only as a late Ming dynasty monk without any further biographical information. To escape the Tsarist regime in Poland, in 1910, the family emigrated to France, where he changed his name to Jacques Henry Sergene. During the First World War, a young Spreiregen moved to England and began working as a headwear manufacturer and importer of basque berets. Having joined the British Army, he was sent back to France to serve in the Medical Corps before returning to England after the war. In 1938, the Kangol brand was born and owing to the exceptional popularity of its berets, soon became the official supplier of the British Army during the Second World War. As a philanthropist and collector, Spreiregen is known to have built an extraordinary collection of 20th century art led by European avant-garde masters such as Paul Cezanne, Claude Monet, Pierre Bonnard, Pablo Picasso, Mark Chagall, Mikhail Larionov and Natalia Gontcharova. Maintaining close ties with France, he was avid in his support of the community of Jewish artists in Paris, which included Chaïm Soutine, Pinchus Krémègne, Abraham Mintchine and Maurice Blond, and acquired the majority of his collection directly from the artists' studios. The underside of the head engraved 'In memory of Sir R D'Arcy Hildyard Br', to a tapered reeded shank. Tested as approximately 15ct gold, 4.54g.Finger size NSir Robert D'Arcy Hildyard was the 4th Baronet of Patrington, in the County of York. He was High Sheriff of Yorkshire in 1783, and died in 1814 without male issue, at which time the baronetcy became extinct. The first Baronet, Sir Robert Hildyard, served as Gentleman to the Bedchamber of King Charles I, and as a colonel in the royal army during the Civil War. He was raised to baronetcy by Charles II following the Restoration of the Monarchy. The Hildyard family is an ancient line, with the earliest name on the pedigree being Robert Hildeyard, or Hildheard, of Normanby, c.1200. Napoleonic Wars interest: A large Berlin porcelain twin handled urn, c.1816, presented to Sir Henry Hardinge (1785-1856) by the Prussian Prince-General Blücher (1742-1819), finely painted with an oval portrait of Prince Blücher in military uniform wearing his honours within a gilt oak-leaf garland, the reverse with gilt inscription ‘Dem Obersten Hardinge Zun Andenken von Seinem Freunde’ (For the most highly respected Hardinge, in remembrance from his friends), the sides with gilt trophies, 49cm highBlücher (1742-1819) was Commander of the Prussian Army in the Napoleonic Wars. He began his career in the Swedish cavalry before joining the Prussian Hussars, soon rising to General Field Marshal. Noted for his bravery rather than his tactical abilities (his nickname was 'Old Forwards') he was defeated on various occasions during the earlier part of Napoleon's campaigns. However, his role was crucial at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. His timely arrival on the battlefield swung the balance in favour of Wellington and the allied forces.Sir Henry Hardinge (1785-1856), later first Viscount Hardinge of Lahore, was a soldier of great note who had fought extensively against Napoleon in the Peninsular War. In April 1815 he was made Brigadier-General and appointed to Prussian Military Headquarters as British Military Commissioner to Blücher. In this role it is said that it was Hardinge's insistance that the Prussians move with haste to Waterloo, after their defeat the day before, that helped save the battle. Blücher had been reticent in moving his tired troops into another engagement.In recognition of his services, he was awarded the Prussian Order of Military Merit in 1816 for his part in the campaign. This vase was undoubtedly part of a Prussian state gift to Hardinge made in gratitude.The urn has been extensively broken and repaired just below one of the gilt trophies to the side curving round across the bulbous base and pedestal foot with a metal plate fixing on the interior. The foot is also cracked and there are some chip losses to the top of the pedestal foot at the join to the base of the body some restoration around the immediate areas of the cracks.PLEASE NOTE:- Prospective buyers are strongly advised to examine personally any goods in which they are interested BEFORE the auction takes place. An original Vietnam War era US United States M1 steel combat helmet with memorial artwork dedicated to the 44th ARVN Rangers / Vietnamese Rangers. The helmet having a black and desert tan paintwork with a front snarling black tiger superimposed over a large yellow star. The Vietnamese Rangers commonly known as the ARVN Rangers, were the light infantry of the Army of the Republic of Vietnam. Trained and assisted by American Special Forces and Ranger advisers, the Vietnamese Rangers infiltrated beyond enemy lines in search and destroy missions.
A WWII Second World War trench art type trinket box / jewellery box with applied British Army General Service button. The button with Kings Crown used as a latch to lock and open the box. Two original Falklands War era bring back FN Herstal made FAL Light Automatic Rifle Type C bayonets. The tubular / socket style bayonets having hollow handles with slots lined up to fit the rifle and a spear headed blade. One being an Argentine army issue marked 01-6228 with tempex nylon frog and the other a Marine Infantry issue with the scabbard marked 02-66615. Each measures approx 32cm.
