Saite Period, 624-525 BC. A silver pendant depicting a sitting cat, Bastet, the goddess of the home, domesticity, women's secrets, cats, fertility and childbirth; seated on a tongue-shaped base, wearing a crescentic necklace, ribbed suspension loop to the rear. 6.54 grams, 20mm (3/4"). Property of a London lady, part of her family's Swiss collection; formerly acquired in the 1980s. Bastet was so popular that, in 525 BCE, when Cambyses II of Persia invaded Egypt, he made use of the goddess to force the Egyptians surrender. Knowing of their great love for cats and other animals, he had his soldiers paint the image of Bastet on their shields, gathered all the animals that could be found and drove them before the army towards the pivotal city of Pelusium. The Egyptians refused to fight for the fear of harming the animals and offending Bastet, and surrendered. Very fine condition.

Ex an important Dutch collection; acquired on the European art market in the 1970s. Miniature eagles were usually copies of the main legionary standard, the Eagle (Aquila"). Speaking of the eagles of Brutus and Cassius: Two eagles alighted upon the two silver eagles which surmounted the standards - ?? ??? ??????? ??? ??????? ??? ??????? ???????????? - pecking at them, or, as others say, protecting them"). The description of the late consular eagle (?????, army of Crassus crossing the Euphrates) is in Cassius Dio, XL,18: “the so called eagle of the army. It is a small shrine and in it perches a golden eagle. It is found in all the enrolled legions, and it is never moved from the winter-quarters unless the whole army takes the field; one man carries it on a long shaft, which ends in a sharp spike so that it can be set firmly in the ground”. 1956 Bedford RL Green Goddess Registration no. PGW 158Chassis no. 7559Mileage: TBAMoT: Exempt*From the Cornbury Park Estate*Well maintained*Generally good orderThe Bedford RL 'Green Goddess' has played a significant role in British military and social history, standing in when required in civilian life while firmly remaining part of the Army. Down the years many have been sold off with a large number ending up in the hands of collectors who have continued to maintain military levels of maintenance and preservation. This model remains in the very best of condition, its paint and generous-sized bodywork in very good order. No longer fighting fires it has spent the past few years keeping its pumps and busy on the Cornbury Park estate, where it has been used for plant watering. Glass, wheels and tyres are very good too while the unsurprisingly generous interior has tidy seats and trim. Years of maintenance means this example starts and runs well, but it also presents well and the suspension and brakes are good too. There is some history. Potentially a highly usable classic with room for plenty of people, there is no getting away from this RL's big-hearted character.Bonhams' well-maintained example of this much-valued commercial vehicle not only presents well, but is reported to be running and driving well. It is an ideal way of ferrying plenty of friends to the local.Footnotes:Please note the odometer reading is 3,587 miles.Vendor Score Total: 78/100Bidders should note that the automated 100-point Seller's Assessment is provided by each Seller at the point of consignment using the guidelines below, and is not provided, assessed or verified by Bonhams MPH.
