THE BASKET-HILTED BROADSWORD OF CAPTAIN COLIN MACKAY OF BIGHOUSE, COMMANDER OF THE GRENADIER COMPANY OF THE 2ND BATTALION OF THE 78TH REGIMENT OF FOOT, BY R. JOHNSTON, 68 ST JAMES'S ST, LONDON, CIRCA 1805 with double-edged German blade stamped 'Gebruder Fabrikanten in Solingen' within a very slender near full-length fuller on each side, gilt-brass basket-hilt formed in two halves, comprising flattened bars carrying an alternating arrangement of rectangular and square panels, short scrolling quillon, the forward panel applied with a flaming grenade in silver, fluted bun-shaped pommel (gilding worn, polished), original wire-bound fishskin-covered grip, in its original leather scabbard with engraved gilt-brass mounts, the locket inscribed with the maker's details, and retaining much gilding throughout 81cm; 31Pin blade On loan to the National War Museum of Scotland 1932-2005, inv. no. L1932-150. Literature Brian Robson, Swords of the British Army, the Regulation Patterns, 1788-1914, London 1996, pp.178-9, illustrated. The maker is recorded at this address circa 1798-1838.
