English Civil War – The Restoration – Charles II disbands the New Model Army An Act for the speedy provision of money for disbanding and paying off the Forces of this Kingdom both by land and sea. Dated April 25th 1660. Folio 48pp unbound^ good condition. Together with An Act for raising sevenscore thousand pounds for the compleat disbanding of the whole Army and paying off some part of the Navy. Folio 10pp unbound^ good condition. Two vital Acts in the success of the Restoration. On the departure from office of Richard Cromwell^ the country was full of disaffected troops from the former New Model Army who had not been paid. There were considerable fears that the Army might wish to take control via a military coup^ so it was vital that they should be at first appeased financially and then completely disbanded so that Charles could begin the long hard drive to restore normality to the country without the fear of insurrection from the country’s own army.

India – Punjab Sikh painting of Baba Deep Singh c1880. A rare painting of Baba Deep Singh fighting Afghan forces. Baba Deep Singh the central figure holding his head whilst fighting the retreating Afghan enemy. He wields his Khanda sword slaying the enemy. Baba Deep Singh is revered among Sikhs as one of the most hallowed martyrs in Sikhism and as a highly religious person. He is remembered for his sacrifice and devotion to the teachings of the Sikh Gurus. He was the first jathedar (Head) of Damdami Taksal a 300 years old religious school of the Sikhs which was allegedly founded by last Sikh Guru^ Guru Gobind Singh. In April 1757^ Ahmad Shah Durrani raided Northern India for the fourth time. On his arrival in Lahore^ Durrani^ embittered by his loss^ ordered the demolition of the Harimandir Sahib. The shrine was blown up and the sacred pool filled with the entrails of slaughtered cows. Durrani assigned the Punjab region to his son^ Prince Timur Shah^ and left him a force of ten thousand men under General Jahan Khan. Baba Deep Singh^ aged 75-years old^ felt that it was up to him to atone for the sin of having let the Afghans desecrate the shrine. He emerged from scholastic retirement (he had been making copies of the Guru Granth Sahib)^ and declared to a congregation at Damdama Sahib that he intended to rebuild the temple. Five hundred men came forward to go with him. Deep Singh offered prayers before starting for Amritsar: "May my head fall at the Darbar Sahib." According to the Sikh legend^ Baba Deep Singh had vowed to avenge the desecration of the Golden Temple by the Afghan army. In 1757^ he led an army to defend the Golden Temple. The Sikhs and the Afghans clashed^ in the battle of Amritsar^ at the village of Gohalwar on November 11^ 1757 and in the ensuing conflict Baba Deep Singh was decapitated. Baba Deep Singh continued to fight after having been decapitated^ slaying his enemies with his head in one hand and his sword in the other. Measures Approx 20cm by 17 cm. Provenance came from album of watercolours and ephemera belonging to General Roberts who served in India in 1880s – he had many Sikh soldiers serving under him. This has to be one of the earliest paintings of painting of Baba Deep Singh. Paintings of Guru Nanak Ji and Guru Gobind Singh Ji from the same school can be seen in the Victoria and Albert Museum.
Extremely rare handwritten Account of the Battle Saragarhi India – a 1st edition of ‘Tirah 1897’^ from the collection of historian Byron Farwell^ with his occasional pencilled underlinings. Laid in is an 6pp signed manuscript letter marked `Please Read only Yourself’ – will give you some idea of what is going on at the front` written and signed by J A Lindsay^ a member of the Tirah campaign^ who arrived at Sargarhi as the relief force^ after the bloody battle^ where 21 Sikhs of the 4th Battalion of the 36th Sikh Regiment of British India defended an army post against 10^000 Afghan tribesman. The long letter is headed ‘Tirah Field Force^ Fort Lockhart^ Samana^ 6 October 1897’ folded^ written on rectos and versos^ approximately 600 words. It is very clean and legible^ with no tears. Lindsay describes the Battle of Saragarhi (one of history`s great last stands) and the aftermath. He says that ‘Saragarhi is an awful sight which 21 Sikhs behaved so admirably.and the place is anything but sanitary^ as of course not much burying could be done.’ He goes on describe the current military situation and to complain of the intense cold and the lack of water and proper clothes. He talks of the strategic positions and engagements on the range^ `The 36th Sikhs marched over from Gulistan (4 miles) this morning carrying the standard they had captured from the enemy – they are a splendid corps and have made a great name for themselves.` An interesting insight into the fighting on the North-West Frontier`s most famous post. Original red cloth binding^ black spine lettering. With five maps (one folding). Saragarhi was a military post between Fort Lockhart and Fort Gulistan^ The Battle of Saragarhi was fought during the Tirah Campaign on 12 September 1897 between 21 Sikhs of the 4th Battalion (then 36th Sikhs) of the Sikh Regiment of British India^ defending an army post^ and 10^000 Afghan and Orakzai tribesmen. The battle occurred in the North-West Frontier Province^ now named the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and is part of Pakistan. The contingent of the twenty-one Sikhs from the 36th Sikhs was led by Havildar Ishar Singh. They all chose to fight to the death. Considered by some military historians as one of history`s great last-stands. This letter written three weeks after Saragarhi gives an insight to the Saragarhi post by a soldier arriving days after the battle^ giving the aftermath of the battle at first hand by a British officer who was part of the campaign. Provenance: From the collection of the late Byron Edgar Farwell (1921-1999) American military historian and biographer.
