Within the album are various official documents, cards and notes from Wray's time in service. Including: National Service cards, Air Crew Acceptance documents, receipts for uniform and expenses, tickets and programmes from entertainment occasions, medal cards, canteen menus, target practise targets, programmes and leaflets, 'Army Welfare News', items from Italy and South Africa, and many other items (likely 200+ items within this album). Also within the collection are two incredible unique ' Lineshoots ' raid diaries by Wray. Spanning two lined notebooks, each and every raid Wray took part in is listed in great detail - including details of his crew, targets and even the aircraft which took part. Each raid is detailed down to its success (or not) and whether any damage was taken, the bomb payload etc. 'Vol I' includes several never-before-seen bomb photographs (taken at the moment of impact by the bomb release camera). Both albums feature a host of period cuttings, German propaganda and other items that relate to the specific raids. Some astonishing content within, which makes for some fascinating and sombre reading. Of note within Vol I (abridged for cataloguing purposes):  'No.1 Operation - Target: Road Between Podgorica-Klopot... Cloud spoiled the day, bombing attack only 11 of 26 saw target sufficiently clear to bomb although one crew claimed a direct hit on a bridge...duration 3hrs 10mins.''No.8 Operation - 15.1.45 - 28 aircraft were off to drop supplies to partisans. Due to cloud obscuring target, only three aircraft were able to locate and drop their containers. All aircraft returned to base...''No.10 Operation - 20.1.45 - Target: Udine Marshalling Yards, North Italy....heavy damage is seen to industrial and rail installations...yards were inactive at time of photography... Casualties: Sgt Wilson's crew...was missing. They ditched...after 3 days were picked up by a navy corvette...broke his leg and wireless operator never got out of plane... C Charlie returned back with engine trouble and...came back because all bombs hung up'(Volume 1 covers operations No.1 to No.19 - largely railway / marshalling yards and roads etc)Vol.II which covers operations No.20 to No.26, and features similar detailed notes on each raid. The final one (No.26) ends with ' This was the last operation of 205 group ' and is dated as being 25.4.45. The diaries alone represent an incredible unique window into the world of a WWII RAF Bomb Aimer / Flight Sergeant in Bomber Command. Fascinating reading, and an important part of WWII history. Also included within the collection is a wealth of paperwork - both official and unofficial relating to Wray, various aircraft documents, training manuals (many marked 'Restricted'), letters to and from Wray (some with censor marks) and various post-war items including various later-issued books with dedicated to Wray, newspaper cuttings, bombing maps and photographs, a raft of Wray's original training notes - including how to use the instruments in an aircraft, how RADAR works etc. Hundreds of documents, letters, notes and booklets. One of the most fascinating collections we have ever come across, and an incredibly important part of history.

A stained hardwood, probably elm, commemorative portrait relief panel of Field Marshal Sir Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, after Peter Rouw (1770-1852), circa 1820, the Duke portrayed in profile looking to sinister; the stained pine frame carved with laurel in relief, 40 x 32cm overall Arthur Wellesley was born in Dublin to the Earl and Countess of Mornington. Though he was an active politician and even served as Chief Secretary of Ireland and later Prime Minister during his lifetime, he is mainly remembered for his remarkable military achievements. Wellesley fought in Flanders in 1794 and subsequently directed a military campaign in India in 1796, for the success of which he was knighted upon his return to the UK. He was given the title Duke of Wellington in 1814, in the year before his most famous victory: the defeat of Napoleon at Waterloo in 1815. When he returned to England, he was honoured and celebrated as a national hero. The present relief was probably made in the years after this landmark victory. The choice of timber carries a wider significance. At a crossroads near the battlefield at Waterloo stood an elm tree, later nicknamed the 'Waterloo Elm', which had often served as a command post for the Duke. The tree died at the hands of souvenir hunters in the years after the battle, and was subsequently turned into furniture and objects, including a chair by Thomas Chippendale the Younger which was presented to King George IV and still remains in the Royal Collection. John Children, an entrepreneurial librarian at the British Museum, acquired the felled tree to sell its wood for the manufacture of further objects. It is possible that the panel is connected to this thriving souvenir market for commemorative objects in (Wellington's) elm.A similar relief, only carved in oak, is in the collection of the National Army Museum, NAM. 2000-07-119-1.

Chris Calle (American, B. 1961) "Battle of Gettysburg" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media on Illustration Board painting. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood Art Print for the U.S. 1995 Civil War Series. During the first two years of the Civil War, the South won every major battle in the Eastern theatre except Antietam. General Robert E. Lee, however, preferred not to fight another battle in Virginia, where provisions were scarce. Supplies could be readily obtained in the North and a battle won on Northern soil would be more impressive. Lee wanted to bring about a battle he could fight on his own terms that would result in the destruction of a large part of the Union Army. As Lee's army marched north, however, the choice of Gettysburg for the greatest battle of the war was mere happenstance. On July 1, 1863, Confederate forces converging there numbered around 75,000; opposing Union forces, under General George Meade, that would ultimately add up to about 85,000. The first day of battle, however, saw the Confederates outnumbering Union soldiers by three to two. The fierce Confederate attack sent Union troops scattering through the town of Gettysburg and into the hills to the south. On the second day, the Confederates came close to seizing Little Round Top, a hill that might have given them a victory, but a strong rally by Union troops prevailed. On the decisive third day of battle, with Confederate supplies running short, General Lee was confronted by the decision to retreat and admit failure or try one more assault. His response was to order 15,000 men, under Major General George E. Pickett, to attack the center of the Union line on Cemetery Ridge. Image Size: 14.25 x 15.25 in. Overall Size: 23.25 x 18.5 in. Unframed. (B15054)

Chris Calle (American, B. 1961) "Stonewall Jackson" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media on Illustration Board Painting. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the 32c "Stonewall" Jackson Classic Collection Series stamp issued June 29, 1995. Thomas Jonathan Jackson graduated from West Point in 1846, 17th in his class. Choosing artillery as his branch of service, Jackson won recognition in the Mexican War and served in the Florida Seminole Theatre in 1850. But an altercation with his commanding officer led to his resignation on May 21, 1851. Three months later, he became a professor at Virginia Military Institute. Those who knew him best called him a "grand, gloomy and peculiarly good man." When Virginia seceded from the Union on April 17, 1861, Jackson left VMI and was commissioned a colonel in the Virginia state forces. Following success in his initial battle at Falling Waters, Virginia, July 2, 1861, he was commissioned a brigadier general in the Confederate Army. During the first Battle of Bull Run, as Jackson held the Southern front against a Union flank attack, General Barnard E. Bee rallied the rest of his troops by shouting "There is Jackson standing like a stone wall. Let us determine to die here, and we will conquer." Victory was achieved and the name "Stonewall" stuck. On May 2, 1863, after a day of fierce fighting at Chancellorsville, Jackson and his staff trotted ahead of the Confederate line to reconnoiter. As they rode back they were mistaken for Federals and fired on. Jackson's left arm was shattered and had to be amputated. He died on Sunday, May 10, 1863, after uttering, "Let us cross over the river, and rest under the shade of the trees." Image Size: 14 x 13 in. Overall Size: 23 x 18 in. Unframed. (B15206)

Chris Calle (American, B. 1961) "Shiloh" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media on Illustration Board Painting. Provenance: Collection of James A. Grant captured Fort Henry on the Tennessee River. He then moved against Fort Donelson on the Cumberland River. When the Confederate commander, General Simon Bolivar Buckner, asked for "the best terms of capitulation," Grant replied, "No terms except an unconditional and immediate surrender can be accepted." Fort Donelson, with nearly 15,000 Confederate troops, surrendered and Grant became a national hero. General Henry W. Halleck, now commander of all western Union forces, ordered Grant to proceed down the Tennessee River. General Don Carlos Buell would then join him from eastern Kentucky. With about 42,000 men, Grant marched to Pittsburg Landing, Tennessee. Confederate General Albert Sidney Johnston, with an army of about 40,000 men, decided to strike at Grant before Buell arrived. The initial Confederate assault on April 6, near Shiloh Church, caught the Federals by surprise. Grant's army was nearly defeated, but somehow managed to hold. General Johnston, however, was wounded in the leg and by nightfall had bled to death. General P.G.T. Beauregard assumed command of Confederate forces. On April 7, Buell arrived with 20,000 Union reinforcements. After savage fighting throughout the day, the Confederates were forced to retreat to Corinth, Mississippi. The Battle of Shiloh, although a Union victory, prompted public outcry to replace Grant because of his heavy losses, more than 10,000 casualties. But Lincoln responded, "I can't spare this man -- he fights!" Image Size: 14.25 x 12 in. Overall Size: 23 x 18 in. Unframed. (B15195)

Brian Sanders (British, B. 1937) "Japan VJ-Day" Original Oil on Canvas painting. With artists notations in margins. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Marshall Islands WWII Mint Stamp Block of 4 issue of September 2, 1995. On the evening of August 9, after the U.S. had destroyed Nagasaki with the second atomic bomb, Japan's Emperor Hirohito told his people that, "The time has come when we must bear the unbearable." By the morning of August 10, all of his cabinet members had signed a statement accepting the surrender to the Allied forces. The one condition requested by the Japanese was that the "supreme power of the Emperor not be compromised." On August 28, Colonel Charles Tench of the U.S Army arrived at Atsugi air base near Tokyo. The C-47 that carried Tench was the lead plane of 45 aircraft that brought in supplies, as well as troops. Over the next two days America's magnificent air power would be displayed, as 200 B-29s and several transports arrived. The American battleships Missouri and South Dakota and the British battleship Duke of York anchored in Tokyo Bay on August 29. A total of 258 vessels of the U.S. Pacific Fleet and several ships from other Allied countries were also in attendance. General Douglas MacArthur, the occupation's supreme commander, arrived on August 30 in his personal C-47, the Bataan. More Allied troops continued to arrive until the formal surrender ceremony. At 8:55 in the morning on September 2, 1945, a nine-member Japanese delegation boarded the USS Missouri. Thousands of sailors, soldiers and newsmen watched as Japan's Foreign Minister Mamoru Shigemitsu and MacArthur signed the document of surrender. Appropriately after the signing the Sun came out marking the dawn of a new era. Image Sizes: 13.5 x 21 in. Overall Size: 27.5 x 42.75 in. Unframed. (B14925 / B14926 / B14927 / B14928)
