The back action locks each marked Swinburn & Co. 1860, the stock with scrolled trigger guard and sprung patchbox marked 'Jacob's Rifles'. Together with a modern gunslip. Jacob's Rifles was a unit of approximately 1,000 men raised by British general John Jacob of the Indian Army. The double-barrelled rifle each was assigned carried a distinct mechanical fit rifling designed by Jacob for a winged bullet as a replacement for the troublesome Brunswick rifle and its belted ball supplied by the British army. These double barrel rifles were sold out of service after Jacob's death and it is at this point this example probably had one of its barrels smooth-bored in order to make it more useable by a hunter. At the same time the bayonet bar from the side of the barrel will have been removed. Section 58(2) antique / obsolete calibre, can be owned without a licence. Buyer must be over the age of 18. Dec. 8th 1894. FC.L.J. Co K. 26th Mich'. This perhaps indicates that the rifle was used as a parade arm late in the 19th century by the Grand Army of the Republic, a large fraternity made up of Union Civil War veterans. Section 58 (2) Antique / obsolete calibre, can be owned without a licence. Buyer must be over the age of 18, age verification will be required if the lot is to be posted out.142cm long
