UNITED KINGDOM. George III, 1760-1820. Halfpenny, 1771, London. Pleasing with retained lustre. Spink lists EF at £325. In secure plastic holder, graded by NGC MS62. Reference: S.3774 Diameter: 29 mm. Weight: 10 g. Composition: Copper The reign of George III was the longest thus far in Britain's history. He was the third monach of the House of Hanover and was the first to be born in Britain and speak English as first language. His reign was marked by many international conflicts. The Seven Years war ended with British victory over the French and although the American revolution led to Britain loosing most of its possessions in the Americas, Great Britain emerged the dominant power in Europe by the late 18th century. The Union Act of 1801 brought Great Britain and Northern Ireland under one unit United Kingdom. The decisive defeat of Napoleon and the French army at Waterloo in 1815 brought the beginning of the most prosperous era in British history. He married Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz in 1761, one year after the coronation, and they had 15 children, among them George IV and William IV. Later in his life the king became increasingly ill and toward the end suffered severe mental illness. After a serious relapse in 1810 his son George (IV) ruled as Prince Regent. His long reign also saw English literature hailed by the grace of some of its most famous masters: Wordsworth, Shelley and Keats were among the writers of the era.
