A Gold Presentation Cup, for The Grand National Steeplechase 1958, the circular body with two scrolled handles, on a tapering circular base, with detachable domed lid with crown finial, engraved with two horses and their jockeys jumping a fence, and inscribed `Grand National Steeplechase 1958, presented by Messrs Tophams Ltd. Won by Mr D J Coughlan`s "Mr What".` by Boodle & Dunthorne, Lord Street, Liverpool, with hallmark for 9ct Gold London 1957. 887 grams. Height 35cm Width 16cm. The 1958 Grand National will always be remembered by the convincing margin of the horse Mr What`s, victory - an incredible 30 lengths. The longest winning distance since 1893. Although he had won the Troytown Chase at Navan, Mr What was effectively little more than a novice. Indeed he had struggled to win a weak Dundalk novice chase barely six months earlier. His owner David `Tone` Coughlan was Managing Director and Chairman of a firm of chemists and also a director of Tuam racecourse, County Galway. Mr What was trained by the Irishman Tom Taafe in Rathcoole, and ridden by The Queen Mother`s jockey Arthur Freeman, who put up six lbs overweight. Mr What`s dominant win was a spectacle to see. His gruelling display of endurance in heavy conditions was inspirational. His victory at odds of 18-1 was well received in Ireland. A correspondent at the time wrote " In Skibbereen town the bookies were disgorging for nearly a fortnight" and bookies across Ireland reported that never in the history of their `profession` did its members receive such a `keelhauling.` Mr What added two third place finishes in the 1959 and 1962 Grand Nationals; but will always be remembered for his devastatingly brilliant performance in 1958.
