A Japanese Meiji period carved ivory brush pot featuring three monkeys chasing insects, signed with three character mark, the associated lid with cloud finial (lid badly af), height to finial approx 15cm.Additional Informationthe lid has been cracked and badly repaired, the finial has been off and crudely re-attached, further heavy wear, does not fit tightly so probably an association, the brush pot with hairlines to the flat section of the rim and further general wear. Base piece has been glued back into place with visible glue. Gap in fitting, small scratches to foot rim.

James 'Jem' Mace (1831-1910) was an English middleweight boxing champion from Norfolk nicknamed 'The Gypsy'. He often succeeded in outboxing heavier opponents thanks to his dancing style, clever defensive tactics and powerful, accurate punching. Mace has a commemorative plaque in the centre of Norwich. The Islington Amateur Boxing Club was founded by Mr D Taylor and C Fuller, and after growing significantly, a competition was put forward to all of England. Robert Barley appears to have won the first two matches at 11 stone in March 1876 and January 1877. Ï’ [Military interest] A George III silver straight-sided oval tea pot by William Vincent, London 1783, with an ivory oval button finial, an ebonised loop handle, a straight tapered spout and quite plain, inscription under base, 28cm (11in) long, 506g (16.25 oz) The inscription reads The gift of the Hon'ble Gen'l Murray (late Governor of Minorca) to Charlotte Knollis 13th. Dec. 1783.General James Murray (1721-1794) was a colonial administrator and under his governorship of Minorca it was besieged and captured by the French in 1782. He was subsequently court martialled in that year but cleared of nearly all charges. Further honours came to him in his last years: he was appointed General, and Governor of Kingston-upon-Hull in 1783, and Colonel of the 21st Regiment in 1789.Sold previously at Hampstead Auctions sale, 17th November 2015, lot 381.
