An interesting 18 bore “Plymouth Dock” percussion pistol, converted from a flintlock duelling or target pistol, 14½” overall, sighted octagonal barrel 9¼” engraved “Plymouth Dock” in script; flat stepped lock with safety bolt and dolphin head hammer, plate engraved with scrolls and “Plymouth Dock” in the same style as on the barrel; walnut halfstock with rounded chequered butt, horn fore end cap, steel mounts including engraved trigger guard with pineapple finial, set trigger, and horn tipped ramrod. Good Working Order and Condition with some dark patina to metalwork. The conversion, which was carried out before the Plymouth Dockyard and scrolls were engraved, involved a completely new breech and a section inserted into the lockplate to accomodate the new configuration. A German 24 bore wheellock holster pistol, c 1640, 19” overall, plain octagonal barrel 12”; large plain flat lock having exposed wheel, baluster arm to the cock and manually operated pan cover; walnut fullstock with incised line and punched decoration around the tang and along opposite the lock; the iron mounts comprise hexagonal butt cap drawn out to a flat point, trigger guard with slender pointed finial, ramrod pipe, and fore end band; with replacement brass tipped ramrod. An early 18th century Italian 38 bore snaphaunce belt pistol, 19” overall, slender 2 stage barrel 13” with brass ring around the muzzle, octagonal breech with ribs along the angles and with small engraved crown over cylinder; foliate engraved lock having hand operated sliding pan cover; with nicely figured moulded fullstock and engraved brass mounts, comprising elaborately pierced sideplate, escutcheon and throat pipe finial, spurred butt cap with grotesque mask finial, trigger guard with pierced finial and grotesque mask on the bow, engraved trigger plate and baluster ramrod pipes; with 5” slender iron belt hook and wooden ramrod with baluster brass tip. Good Working Order and Condition (approximately 2½” of fore end replaced). Plate 29

A rare 18th century Indian 18 bore matchlock pistol, 17” overall, heavy tapered 2 stage barrel 11” with raised rearsight at the breech, faint traces of gold koftgari decoration and secured by a single plain silver barrel band; fullstock stepped at the muzzle end, butt pierced and with domed finial; trigger with gold koftgari decoration (worn), and with silver match holder. A scarce “Bow Street Runners” 22 bore flintlock overcoat pocket pistol, by Tatham & Egg (1801-1814), 9½” overall, octagonal barrel 5¼” engraved “London”; plain flat stepped lock with safety bolt, signed “Tatham & Egg”; plain walnut fullstock with flat sided rounded butt and brass mounts, trigger guard with acorn finial and engraved on the bow “Bow Street” in script and numbered “1/3”; with a replacement ramrod. Good Working Order and Condition, (dark patina to lock, barrel very lightly pitted overall). Plate 31

A good 16 bore flintlock holster pistol by P. Gandon, c 1740, 15” overall, sighted russet barrel 9¼” with gold touch hole, London proofs and traces of maker’s name and “London”; slightly rounded lock having elegant swan neck cock and signed within a foliate scroll; plain walnut fullstock carved around the barrel tang with scallop shell and scrolls; brass mounts include long spurred butt cap, large plain oval escutcheon, and flower engraved trigger guard with pineapple finial, and having a 2¾” steel belt hook on the left side; with a later brass tipped ramrod. Good Working Order and Condition. Plate 34 Note: To have a belt hook on a pistol of this type and age is quite unusual.

A good steel barrelled flintlock sea service blunderbuss, c 1765, from the Warwick Castle Collection, 39½” overall, swamped barrel 23” with London proofs and ordnance board viewer’s mark; line engraved rounded lock with swan neck cock, plate engraved “Brooks” and “Tower” and struck with ordnance lock viewer’s mark; plain walnut fullstock with brass mounts, including flat butt plate, trigger guard with domed circular finial and large flat wavy sideplate; brass tipped ramrod of the correct type. Good Working Order and Clean Condition (lock markings faint). Plate 37 Note: Originally made as a “Black Sea Service” weapon with draw filed black finish, but struck down and polished bright, possibly during its service life.

A good rare 1718 pattern naval brass barrelled flintlock blunderbuss, 44½” overall, the earlier bell mouth barrel having raised ring and sighting notch at the breech, and struck with William III proof marks, maker’s mark of crown over “PB”, number “43”, and small cock, bevelled pan, and unbridled frizzen, plate engraved with crown over “GR” and “Rose 1739” (apparently altered from earlier “20”, for 1720), and struck with ordnance lock viewer’s mark; walnut fullstock, butt with clear deeply struck ordnance store keeper’s mark, with brass mounts, including flat butt plate and trigger guard with circular finial. Good Working Order and Clean untouched Condition, with a later brass tipped ramrod. Plate 37

A brass barrelled flintlock naval blunderbuss, by Ketland & Co, probably made c 1780 in an earlier style,31½” overall, heavy bell mouth barrel 16”, the breech struck with London and maker’s proofs; plain rounded lock with swan neck cock and unbridled frizzen, plate signed “Ketland & Co”, plain steel fullstock, with early military pattern brass mounts including flat butt plate, trigger guard with domed finial, and long wavy sideplate; with a replacement brass tipped ramrod.
