18th-17th century BC. A D-shaped baked clay plaque fragment with high-relief figure of a standing god Nergal wearing tall cap, with long curly hair and heard, a pair of bull(?) ears, in left hand holding a mace decorated by a double lion's head, two daggers secured at the belt, a pair of decoration or weapons with lion head finial to the shoulders. See similar depiction in The Israel Museum, accession number: 89.40.15; Princeton University Art Museum, accession number 2002-74. 177 grams, 10.3cm (4"). From a German collection; acquired on the German art market before 1990. Nergal was a Mesopotamian god of war, plague and negative aspect of the sun. His domain was the Underworld, where he ruled over death together with other deities and later with his wife Ereshkigal. According to one myth, she had been the sole queen of the underworld into which Nergal was sent to apologise for having offended her messenger. There, he was seduced by her, but managed to trick his way out of her realm. Ereshkigal was angry about the loss of her lover and finally had him brought back to her. From this point onward, they ruled the underworld jointly. In his astral aspect, he was connected with planet Mars. As a god of war and underworld, Nergal controlled a variety of demons and evil forces, who are particularly prominent in the myth of Erra as agents of death and destruction. [No Reserve]. A hollow fabricated pendant comprising: transverse tubular suspension bar with beaded wire collars, granule and beaded wire detailing; waisted D-shaped plaque with granule and beaded wire bands, scooped eyelids and tubular eye sockets with black glass insets; old collector's accession number to the reverse. Cf. similar gold beast-head finial on the Alfred Jewel in Webster, L. & Backhouse, J. The Making of England. Anglo-Saxon Art and Culture AD 600-900, London, 1991, item 260. The pendant is one of a series of Middle Saxon type prestige items bearing fierce dragon-head imagery, of which the Alfred Jewel is the most notable example. Similar heads, facing and in profile, appear on the Anglian 'Coppergate' helmet from York where they form terminals to the nasal and to the decorative raised border of the ocular. The design reflects the Insular Style of ornament, with raised bands to the brow and roundels for the eyes. Similar animal heads are incorporated in the decorative schemes of contemporary manuscripts such as the Book of Kells. . Extremely fine condition. Excessively rare.

Bacchus was an ancient Italian deity who became associated with his Greek counterpart during the settlement of South Italy by Greek colonists and the arrival of the mystery religion associated with him which proved to be extremely popular with the wealthy middle class. English Language & Linguistics, Senior Lecturer 1994-2009, and advisor to the British Museum and Portable Antiquities Scheme, says: I’m not sure what the central motif is – might be the flower emerging from a heart – common on such ‘love & loyalty” peresonal seals – the legend reads IE SV SEL DAMOR = “I am [a/the] seal of love”. 5.89 grams, 20mm (3/4").
