19th Century Welsh mahogany 8 day longcase clock Kerr & Co, Swansea, having arched hood above arch aperture, flanked by spirally turned columns, the waist with a herringbone banded rectangular door flanked by spirally turned columns on a similar panelled base with bracket feet. Pained Roman numeral face with rolling moon to the arch second dial and date aperture, 17.5 x 12" approx. 8 day two train movement striking on one bell, overall 212cm high approx. (B.P. 21% + VAT) Fair condition overall, some wear to the face, seconds hand is missing, includes two weights, pendulum and winder. Lacks original finial to hood. Wear and tear commensurate with age.

A RARE LATE ELIZABETH I STEEPLE CUP AND COVER with a deep conical bowl, chased with a row of scallop shells below fleur-de-lys and a vacant shield cartouche against a matt ground & above a calyx of alternating stiff leaves and fruit, the baluster stem with adornment, supported on a bell-shaped foot, chased with fleur-de-lys above a formal moulded border, the domed cover chased with a row of scallop shells above row of fleur-de-lys against a matt ground, the steeple chased with chevrons and terminating in a turned finial, flanked by three scrolls, inscribed under the foot "EX DONO IO: WALTON ARCHIDIACONI DERBIE 1603", the whole with traces of gilding, maker's mark "AB" conjoined, London 1602; 10.9" (27.7 cms) high to rim; 16.9" (42.7 cms) high overall; 23.4 oz Provenance: This cup was presented to the owner's grandfather as the prize, when his horse "DON SANCHO" won the Irish Grand National in 1928 and sold with the cup is a small inscribed disc relating to its presentation. It was also catalogued as part of a Loan Exhibition of Old English Plate and Decorations and Orders at 25 Park Lane and Seaford House, in March 1929 (catalogue No. 794)

A GEORGE II TEA CADDY rectangular with panelled sides, incurved at each corner, with chased borders of flowers, scrolls and shells against matting, the hinged cover with a cast flower finial, engraved on the front, with a coat of arms by Abraham Portal*, London 1749; 6" (15 cms) high; 13.9 *The Arms are those of either Jones or Huntly. Abraham Portal (1726-1809) was a member of the Huguenot family originating in Bagnols-sur-Ceze, Languedoc, France. Guillame Portal born 1639 was "of the Great Wardrobe" of William III and Anne. His brother, Jean Francois also fled to England, father of three sons and seven daughters. The second son, Pierre Guillaume, became rector of Clowne, County Derby, c.1724 and of South Fambridge, Essex in 1734. His second son, Abraham, (described as son of William Portal) was apprenticed to Paul de Lamerie in 1740 and became free in 1749. This tea caddy bears the Portal's first mark and was hallmarked during his first year as a registered large worker. Later on, Portal became an important figure in the literary scene, writing poetry and several major plays between 1758 and 1768, commenting on social, political and religious developments. He is one of the few Goldsmiths to appear in the Dictionary of National Biography on account of his literary activitues.
