A pair of Chinese Canton enamel ewers and covers, 18th/19th century, each with a raised lotus-petal shaped reserve depicting He Xiangu and an attendant to each side, on a flower and leaf scroll decorated yellow ground, with ‘cracked ice’ handle and spout, the domed covers surmounted by a gilt copper lion finial, 33.5cm high
A fine Chinese pale celadon jade tripod censer and cover, gui, Qianlong, carved in low relief with bands of archaistic scrolls and taotie masks, with a pair of strap handles, the domed cover with carved and reticulated chilong and leaf finial, the stone of even tone with small white inclusions and russet veining, 14cm wide, 10.5cm high. Provenance: The property of Mrs A.R. Knatchbull-Hugessen from Ropley House, near Alresford, Hampshire. Anna-Rose Bramwell is the daughter of Major Henry McClintock Bunbury Bramwell. She married Lord James Charles-Crichton Stuart, 3rd son of the 5th Marquess of Bute and Lady Eileen Beatrice Forbes, in London 1970. In 1947 ownership of Dumfries House passed to the 5th Marquess and upon his death in 1956, the Dowager Marchioness of Bute returned to live at Dumfries House. Following her marriage to Lord James Crichton Stuart, Anna-Rose and her husband received gifts from the 6th Marquess of Bute. In 1992 Anna-Rose married Peter Merrick Knatchbull-Hugessen, son of George Arthur Knatchbull-Hugessen and Jessie Kay. She lived in 2003 at Ropley House until the present time.. Literature: This form of 18th century Chinese censer is more commonly found in spinach jade. See Roger Keverne (Consultant Ediitor), Jade, Anness Publishing Ltd. London 1991 for examples.
