1920s four piece silver teaset comprising, teapot of compressed baluster form with pierced flared border, scroll handle and hinged domed cover with carved finial, on four paw feet, matching coffee pot, sugar and cream jug (Birmingham 1923/24) Alexander Clark & Co Ltd. All at approximately 56ozs. Teapot 32.5cm across.

Lot 299

1911 pigeon fancier's silver twin handled trophy cup, with engraved presentation inscription and slip in cover, surmounted with a finial in the form of a pigeon. On a separate turned wood plinth. "The Royal Cup" presented by George V to the winner of the North Road Championship Club, Lerwick Race 1911, won by Mr Dan Fitzjohn from Peterborough whose bird reached a velocity of 1104. (London 1911). Maker's mark rubbed. All at approximately 16ozs. 29cm overall height.The Royal Cup race from Lerwick was started in 1902 and the Royal Cup that is presented to the winner is viewed as one of the most prestigious. trophies in the whole of pigeon racing.

TWO CHINESE STYLE GILTWOOD OCCASIONAL TABLES PROBABLY FRENCH, 19TH CENTURY each with a circular top with a moulded edge inset with a Chinese cloisonee panel, one depicting scholar's objects with vases of flowers, incense burners and a brushpot with a stand, the other with a lion dog accompanied by a pair of magpies, above a Chinese style base with a pierced frieze carved with dragons, on scroll legs united by an 'X' stretcher with a pagoda finial (2) PROVENANCE Lionel de Rothschild (1882-1942) Edmund de Rothschild (1916 - 2009) The Trustees of Exbury House CATALOGUE NOTE The subject matter of these Chinese cloisonne tables offers a subtle hidden meaning. The peach, pomegranate and finger citron that feature on the scholar's panel form the auspicious 'asn duo' or the 'Three Abundances' invoking the wish for good fortune, longevity and an abundance of descendants. The magpies that feature in the other panel are always auspicious symbols, the birds of good fortune and love. The first character for the name of the bird, xi que, has the same sound as xi, which means 'happiness'.

A PAIR OF GEORGE III MAHOGANY DINING ROOM URNS AND PEDESTALS IN THE MANNER OF GILLOWS c.1775-80 each urn of campana shape, with lobed, fluted and ribbed decoration, the lid with a fir cone finial revealing a later lined interior, with gilt brass handles and gilded taps, the pedestals with crossbanded tops, the fronts with stained sycamore banding and inlaid with boxwood stringing, one with a hinged door with false drawer fronts revealing a vacant interior, the other with a top drawer to hold water to wash glasses, above a cupboard originally with a chamber pot and a base drawer for wine bottles, now lacking original linings (2) 182cm high, 50cm wide, 48cm deep PROVENANCE With Denys Wrey Ltd., 45 Sloane Street, London, S.W.1 and sold to G. E. J. Deering Esq. of Ormskirk, Lancashire on the 15th January 1969 for £1,400. LITERATURE Susan E. Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London 17301840, vol.1, p.315, pl.356, for a similar pair of dining room pedestals and vases with cone finials, attributed to Gillows made for John Bell of Thirsk Hall, North Yorkshire.

A Rare Stick Barometer by George Adams _ The silvered brass scale calibrated from 27" to 31" with weather indications and a sliding vernier incorporating a brass pointer and a small brass knob for adjustment. The engraved inscription to the arch reads; Made by G. Adams, No 60 Fleet Street, London. Instrument Maker to his Majesty. The fine mahogany case (c. 103cm) with exposed mercury tube, surrounded with herringbone mahogany veneer, well turned mahogany cistern cover and architectural top with central brass finial, c.1765. Note: George Adams was an outstanding barometer maker, optician and instrument maker. He was apprenticed to James Parker in 1724 and Thomas Heath in 1726 who was also a maker of some note. He was instrument maker to His Majesty's Office of Ordnance between 1746 and 1748. He became instrument Maker to the Prince of Wales in the 1750s and then Instrument Maker to his Majesty King George III in 1760. George Adams died in 1773 leaving two sons by the names of George and Dudley to carry on the business into the 19th century.Collect in person or specialist courier
