A Charles II English provincial silver lace-back trefid spoon, probably by John Mortimer (maker’s mark only struck three times), Exeter, circa 1684, the bowl with ribbed rat-tail, the top of the back of the stem pricked ‘W.E.’ over ‘1684’ over ‘S.B.’, 19.8cm (7.75in) long, 43g (1.35 oz) This version of the maker’s mark does not appear in Kent or Jackson. Literature: ‘The Finial’, issue 16/02 (Nov/Dec 2005), p. 7 where this spoon is illustrated and discussed by Jeremy Griffin Condition report** In good condition overall. The die struck decoration worn, but central on the stem. The marks fairly clear.
