Classical World, Etruria, ca. early 6th century CE. A large kyathos, a drinking cup with a tall handle, in the glossy black style of Bucchero ware. This particular example has a low, wide foot and a tall loop handle decorated with a foliate finial (a common Etruscan symbol) and a little mask. The body also has a design of bulbous protrusions at regular intervals punctuated by masks; the finial shape is echoed around the rim. Size: 8.55" L x 6.35" W x 7.6" H (21.7 cm x 16.1 cm x 19.3 cm)Items like these were wheel-made, with a foot that was thrown separately on the wheel and joined to the rest of the body as the two pieces began to harden. It was then burnished with a slip and fired in a reducing atmosphere to produce this glossy black color, which is the famous Bucchero style. This kyathos almost certainly came from a funerary context, placed in an opulent Etruscan tomb as an offering. However, it was probably placed there because similar - or maybe even the same - vessels were used in life by the people of Etruria; items placed in the tomb were meant to be a link between the world of the living and the dead, and to help furnish a symbolic domestic space for the deceased. Provenance: Ex-Private Orange County, CA collection Condition: Repaired from multiple pieces, with some losses in the repaired areas. West Africa, Benin, ca. 19th century CE. A cast bronze "palace" plaque depicting a mudfish legged king (oba) holding a wild cat in each hand, flanked by a pair of attendants holding similar felines and playing flutes, created via the cire perdue (lost wax) technique with incised details. The king wears a high beaded choker, multistrand necklace, beaded cap headdress w/ pendants and a cross finial, beads and/or scarification marks on his torso and arms, a hip wrap decorated with three masks. Custom stand. Size: 12.875" W x 12.5" H (32.7 cm x 31.8 cm); 14.5" H (36.8 cm) on stand. The Oba's palace in Benin was comprised of an extensive array of buildings and courtyards as well as the setting for royal ancestral altars and elaborate court ceremonial rituals, many of which were depicted on relief bronze/brass plaques. According to the Metropolitan Museum of Art's catalogue entitled "Royal Art of Benin: The Perls Collection" the only historical reference to these plaques was a 17th century eyewitness description of the palace complex by Olfert Dapper which reads as follows: "It is divided into many magnificent palaces, houses, and apartments of the courtiers, and comprises beautiful and long square galleries, about as large as the exchange at Amsterdam, but one larger than another, resting on wooden pillars, from top to bottom covered with cast copper, on which are engraved the pictures of their war exploits and battles, and kept very clean." (quoted in Roth 1968: 160). Contrary to Dapper's account, these plaques were not engraved but rather cast in relief with details incised in the wax model. Provenance: Ex-private New Jersey Collection Condition: Losses and surface wear commensurate with age. Nice patina. Southeast Asia, Burma (modern day Myanmar), ca. 19th century CE. A hand-carved and hand-painted traditional Burmese theater puppet head, probably carved from Gmelina arborea (yamanay) wood, with an articulated mouth, an elaborate seven-tiered headdress with a flame finial and ear ornaments, and an elegant face, its eyes inlaid with black and white glass. According to Dr. Tin Maung Kyi, a medical doctor as well as an expert on Burmese puppetry, each puppet is typically comprised of seventeen to nineteen pieces that are string operated; the head and neck piece, the body in two pieces, a pair of arms in six pieces and a pair of legs in eight pieces. Burmese marionettes are incredibly intricate and dexterous as they require eighteen (for male characters) or nineteen (for female) wires, and even more amazingly, all of these wires are controlled only by one puppeteer. The size of the head determines the height of the puppet, and the hand-span (distance between the thumb and tip of middle finger) determines the circumference of the head. Clearly, this head belonged to a rather large puppet. The tradition of Burmese puppet theater (yoke thay) originated in the 15th century CE and saw its peak in popularity in the 19th century. The performances would last all night and shows called upon the talents of puppeteers, singers, and musicians. A Burmese marionette troupe involves twenty-seven characters, including a king, animals such as horse, elephant, tiger, monkey and parrot, ministers, a prince and princess, buffoons, and various mythical characters. Each puppet is danced in its own particular manner. This puppet represents a mythical being, probably Thagyar Min, the King of the Celestial Beings, who wears a seven-tiered headdress and an opulent costume resembling ceremonial dress worn by Burmese kings on stately occasions that is comprised of a gold-hued robe embellished with sequins and beads. He also carries a double-edged sword in his right hand. According to Dr. Kyi, this puppet must always descend upon the stage from above the handrail, signifying his elevated abode and by extension, his high status. What's more, his feet are never to touch the floor. Custom wood stand. A fabulous example from this cherished Burmese tradition. Size: head measures 9.5" L x 8" W x 22.25" H (24.1 cm x 20.3 cm x 56.5 cm); 26.625" H (67.6 cm) on standFor additional information about Burmese puppetry see the following sources: Bruns, A.: Burmesische Marionettenkunst 2000, Bangkok (Ph.D.Thesis); Cowell, E.B.: The Jataka or Stories of the Buddha's former births 1969, London: Luzac & Co; Ma Thanegi: The illusion of life.
