Click here to subscribeA good Chinese Champleve enamel vase and cover, mid 20th century, the cover with gilt dog of fo finial and decorated throughout with lotus flowers and scrolls with ruyi head and false gadrooned bands, the interior and underside in blue enamel, height 13.5 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The vase appears to be in good order throughout with no obvious visible faults.
A carved marble figure of Buddha, 19th/20th century seated in Dhyana Mudra dressed in a long robe, height 33 cm. CONDITION REPORT: There is a piece missing to the finial of his headdress. There is approximately a third section of the side missing from the left hand side of the headdress but it would appear these have been missing for quite some time, the stone is a uniform colour throughout. A small section of the headdress at the front has been broken off and glued back on. There is a vacant aperture to his forehead. Other than those faults mentioned there are no further obvious faults visible.

A matched pair of East Roman gold earrings each a large piriform cell with inset green glass cloison, border and bow of graduated granules, drum-shaped element with repoussé ribbing and three lines of filigree and granules converging to a large granule finial; ornaments from a temple-ring assemblage, with backs of hoops absent. David Dennis started collecting items when he was a 10 year old boy during the Blitz in London gathering parts of nose cones from shells and other pieces of shrapnel that had fallen from the skies. After the war he turned his attentions to cigarette cards, postage stamps, bank notes, coins and eventually ancient artefacts, predominately Roman jewellery. Now living in Cumbria with his daughter he decided it was time to part with his collections. [2, No Reserve] Fine condition.
7th-9th century AD. A mixed group of silver-gilt liturgical items comprising: a hanging lamp with flared foot, carinated segmented body flared neck with band of repoussé quatrefoils and florets, rolled rim, three suspension chains with loops and hook; a hollow piriform finial, from a throne or sceptre, with ropework collar and vertical tendril bands with pellets alternating with plain segments; a two-part vestment clasp set each half formed as a parcel-gilt scallop with flared rim and pierced trapezoidal plaque, hook-and-eye hinge. Treasures of the Ferrell Collection, Wiesbaden, 2010, p.278, item 198 for the companion piece to the hanging lamp; ibid item 213 (finial) and 214 (clasps); accompanied by copies of the relevant book pages. 201 grams total, 90-110mm (3 1/2 - 4 1/4"). Song Dynasty, 960-1127 AD. A group of two cream-glazed ceramic granary jars each with a row of facing guardian figures and dragon above, biconvex bulb below the rim with piecrust rim and loops, conical lid with bird finial. 5.20 kg total, 74cm (29"). A carved schist frieze fragment with two figures and outline of a third, one wearing a pleated garment, supporting a curled band with palmette detailing, monstrous bird head finial; mounted on a custom-made stand. 8.6 kg, 34cm including stand (13 1/2"). Property of a London Gandharan art collector, acquired in the late 1990s; formerly with various UK sources acquired by them since the 1960s. Fine condition.
8th-9th century AD. A silver-gilt sword-belt appliqué set with niello detailing comprising: D-shaped buckle loop and tongue; three belt keepers with roundels to the upper face; attachment ring with inlay to accept the scabbard straps; eleven plaques each formed as opposed birds around a central ribbed dome; second attachment ring; sixteen heater-shaped panels each with an advancing lion, four with a separate ring to the lower edge; five panels with lateral point and matching recess, geometric design; similar finial with heater-shaped leading edge; all assembled and mounted in a glazed wooden presentation case. 3.6 kg total, case 132.5cm long (52"). From an old English collection, pre 1965. Fine condition.
12th-10th century BC. A bronze domed conical helmet with cotton-reel stud finial, two ancient rectangular repair panels with bronze fixings. 395 grams, 22cm diameter (8 3/4"). Property of a lady living in Kent, UK; formerly part of her grandfather's collection; acquired in Germany after WWII; thence by descent 2006. Accompanied metallurgic analytical report number 114371/570, written by Metallurgist Dr. Brian Gilmour of the Research Laboratory for Archaeology and the History of Art, University of Oxford. Fine condition, stabilised and restored.
5th-6th century AD. A sheet gold discoid pendant with twisted filigree border, suspension loop with similar border; a B-series bracteate of 'Fürstenberg' type with repoussé design comprising a border of points surrounding a facing female with segmented skirt, bare upper body, staff in each hand with a cruciform finial, five points above the head suggesting a diadem(?"). See Heizmann, W. & Axboe, M. Die Goldbrakteaten der Völkerwanderungszeit: Auswertung und Neufunde, Leiden, 2011 for discussion. 4.72 grams, 37mm (1 1/2"). From the Johnson collection, Hertfordshire, UK; acquired in continental Europe in the early 1980s. The design of this piece closely resembles that of a B-type bracteate found at Welschingen, Baden-Württemburg, Germany. It appears in Hauck's inventory under reference IK 389. The present example lacks the pseudo-inscription above the head. The female figure is usually interpreted as the goddess Frijjo, the ancestor of the later Scandinavian Frigg, wife of the god Oðinn. The iconography, as with most bracteates, is derived from Imperial Roman coinage models - here probably the figure of Victoria. The two cross-headed staffs are interpreted as tools for textile production. Very fine condition. Rare.
6th century AD. A matched pair of silver-gilt bow brooches, each a D-shaped headplate with scallop detailing and three radiating collared knops, shallow bow with median rib, ribbed collar and beast-head finial, pin-lug and catch to the reverse; mounted on a custom-made stand. Cf. Heynowski, R. Bestimmungsbuch Archaeologie: Fibeln, Munich, 2012, item 3.24.2 for type. 125 grams including stand, brooch: 74mm (3"). A silver-gilt buckle set comprising: dished loop with chip-carved running scrolls to the outer face, trapezoidal-section tongue with scrolls to each side of the forward edge and meanders to the rear, two attachment straps each with lobe finial and garnet cabochon mounted in a cell. Cf. Menghin, W. The Merovingian Period. Europe Without Borders, Berlin, 2007, item I.9.10.3 for type. 80 grams, 89mm (3 1/2"). From a private collection; formed 1965-1975. Very fine condition.
13th-14th century AD. A bronze mount comprising a heater shield with three enamelled chevrons, three brackets each with a pierced lobe finial; blazoned 'or three chevrons gules', arms of the Clare family. See Ashley, S. Downs, Louth' and further c-floral spandrels, the hood with broken swan neck pediment centred by a brass orb finial, dentil moulding, reeded columns with brass capitals flaking the glazed door, the trunk with applied quarter columns with brass capitals flanking a full length trunk door with pointed arch and inset escutcheon, raised on shaped bracket feet, with winder, pendulum and two weights, 46.5 by 27 by 243cm high.
