A RARE PAIR OF CENTRAL ITALIAN 50-BORE SNAPHAUNCE PISTOLS, POSSIBLY MADE FOR A BOY, mid-18th century, with 12.5cm. two-stage swamped barrels each with turned girdle and with gold-lined maker`s mark on the octagonal breech-section, iron tangs, foliate engraved rounded locks each with pierced cock, the cock and steel retaining screws each covered with an applied silver(?) mask, moulded walnut full stocks each carved in relief with scrollwork, foliate engraved iron mounts including pierced side-plate and spurred pommel each decorated with a small portrait bust (one trigger-guard retaining screw missing), pierced iron escutcheons each with further portrait bust, and original iron ramrods each with turned finial (iron parts discoloured with some surface corrosion throughout).

N.W.` on the rib, case-hardened border and scroll engraved patent breeches, tang and locks, the last each signed `F. DOWLING`, figured walnut half-stock with no provision for a ramrod, chequered grip and fore-end, border and scroll engraved iron mounts including blued trigger-guard and case-hardened trigger-plate, the latter with pineapple finial, chequered dark horn butt-plate, silver escutcheon, and much original finish, London proof marks. This gun appears to be very little used.

SAUER & SOHN A SUHL` in silver on the rib, silver fore-sight, engraved patent breeches, foliate engraved tang, flat border and scroll engraved locks each with safety-stop, walnut full stock (cracked and repaired in front of left lock) with chequered butt, each panel of chequering also carved in low relief with foliage, engraved iron mounts including trigger-guard with foliate finial and decorated with a scene involving a hound flushing two birds, engraved brass butt-cap, gilt-brass fore-end cap, and original horn-tipped ramrod with worm.

WINNER AT ALL GUN TRIALS 1875 TO 1891`, Facile Princeps patent treble-grip action, patent No. 930 of 1880 incorporating Greener patent `Treble Wedge Fast` crossbolt, patent no. 3084 of 1873, Greener patent automatic side safety with gold-inlaid `SAFE` detail and enlarged lever, border and acanthus scroll engraving, bright and reblued finish overall, 14 1/2in. figured semi-pistolgrip stock including 1in. rubber recoil pad, fore-end with horn finial and Deeley & Edge patent release catch, weight 11lb., in its brass-cornered oak-lined canvas and leather case with green velvet-lined interior, gold-tooled label and some accessories (including large Greener oil bottle). The makers have kindly confirmed that the gun was completed in 1892 with 32in. barrels.

S.W.`, 2 1/2in. chambers, bored approx. 1/4 and full choke, scroll-back treble-grip action with arcaded fences, toplever gold-inlaid with a crown, automatic side-safety with gold-inlaid `SAFE` detail, incorporating Greener`s improved ejector patent 2003 of 1881, use number 3001, the action profusely engraved with fine scrollwork with oak leaf bordering, surrounding vignettes of spaniel flushing mallard, pointer and partridge, the underside with a brace of rabbits, the safety with a pheasant, the triggerguard with two pointers, brushed bright and reblued finish overall, 15in. well-figured stock inset with horn spearpoint drop points and including 7/8in. leather-covered recoil pad, fore-end with Deeley & Edge patent release catch, decorative chequering borders and horn finial, weight 6lb. 10oz., in its brass cornered oak and leather case with canvas outer, green velvet-lined interior, gold-tooled red leather label and some accessories (including WWG marked turnscrew, whistle/cartridge extractor and large Greener oil bottle), the lid of the case with provision for a shooting stick

INDESTRUCTABLE BY GUNPOWDER.`, 2 3/4in. chambers, bored approx. full choke in both, treble-grip action, manual side-safety, partial engraving of fine scrollwork, 14 1/2in. semi-pistolgrip stock including horn buttplate, fore-end with horn finial and Deeley & Edge patent release catch, topstrap and backstrap possibly modified, weight 7lb. 14oz. The gun was completed circa 1896

A fine Victorian cast iron garden fountain, by Andrew Handyside & Co Limited, Derby, dolphin entwined spire finial, shell bowl supported by three dolphins on a rocky base, 100cm diam, 163cm high, brass maker`s nameplate, c.1880 The famous Handyside foundry in Duke Street, Derby, was set up in 1817 by Samuel Weatherhead (1784-1854) an ironmonger in Iron Gate (the predecessor of the present Bennet`s) and Thomas Glover, making architectural and ornamental ironwork. Their first recorded campana urns were made for 16th Earl of Shrewsbury at Alton Towers in Staffordshire, in the 1820s. In 1847 the company was taken over by Andrew Handyside (1805-1887) a Scot who had been trained in founding by an uncle in St. Petersburg, Russia. He maintained the architectural ironwork, but diversified into heavy engineering, including railway station roofs, bridges and water tanks. In 1876 the firm made the ornamental bridge across Friar Gate, Derby, for the Great Northern Railway and undertook much work in Russia and in India; they also made post boxes. Handyside handed over the management of the firm to his nephew, Alexander Buchanan (1829-1912) in 1873, but the firm became insolvent in 1911 and was taken over, continuing until 1931, when it closed for ever and the site was cleared. The heyday of the manufacture of fine urns and fountains, cast in very pure metal to prevent corrosion, was in the 1850s to 1880s.

Derbyshire Fishing Interest - a late Victorian/Edwardian E.P.B.M pedestal ovoid trophy cup, Castle Ward Angling Challenge Cup, Presented by A Ottewell Esq, JP, 1903, finial cast as an angler with his catch, stiff leaf cast fluted angular scroll handles, engraved with scrolling foliage, knopped stem, stepped circular base, 65cm high, c.1900, ebonised plinth Councillor Albert Ottewell JP (1861-1910) was the member of Derby Corporation for Castle Ward - a relatively deprived area near the Railway Station - from 1893 to 1903. Son of Draper Ottewell, he was the nephew and heir of Alderman Sir John Smith, a brass-founder on a national scale, with a works at Derby on Cotton Lane, normally referred to as "Brassy Smiths". On Sir John`s death in 1897, Ottewell succeeded him as proprietor of the Company of which he was then Managing Director. The Fishing trophy was presented as an attempt to help improve the lot of his constituents.
