Another covered tureen of the same shape in The Museum of Royal Worcester is illustrated by John Sandon, Dictionary of Worcester Porcelain (1993), p.343, col.pl.90. The same basic form with moulded panels and a dolphin finial is also recorded by Branyan, French and Sandon (1989), pattern I.A.11. The 'Two-Level Fence and Rock' pattern was used on large-scale pieces, including a punch pot and an octagonal serving dish illustrated by Bernard Watney, English Blue and White Porcelain (1973), pl.28B.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 261

Of Scottish Interest: An important Flight, Barr and Barr Worcester presentation jug and cover, circa 1820Of shouldered ovoid form, with an exuberant foliate moulded handle and exaggerated spout decorated with gilt thistles, the body applied with four bands of 'pearls', the cover with a thistle finial, painted with two gilt-edged panels reserving the arms of Gordon and a titled view of 'Lochnagarr [sic] from the north bank of the Dee opposite Abergeldie', a large spray of thistles painted below the spout, the shoulder with the family crest of a deer hound below the motto 'GOD WITH US', 25cm high, title and script mark in red, cover with printed mark (2)Footnotes:ProvenanceAlexander Gordon, 4th Duke of GordonCharles Dawson CollectionIllustrated by Charles Dawson, Worcester Flight & Barr Porcelain (2023), p.82, fig.8.11. This handsome jug demonstrates the factory's ability to meet the demands of specific commissions. The Scottish thistle features in the modelling, painting and gilding. It was presented to Alexander Gordon, 4th Duke of Gordon by his friends. As the Chief of Clan Gordon, he was the first to bear the rather impressive epithet 'Cock O' the North'. Gordon was Keeper of the Great Seal of Scotland between 1794-1806, again between 1807-1827 and received the Order of the Thistle in 1775. He raised the 92nd Regiment of Foot for the French Revolutionary Wars, later named the Gordon Highlanders and is also credited with popularising and formalising the breed standard of the Gordon setter. He also established the new villages of Fochabers, Tomintoul and Portgordon. The strainer and generous spout suggest this jug was intended for serving toast and water. Burnt toast was mixed with other ingredients to make a medicinal and fortifying drink, which was then strained whilst pouring. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 194

A very fine Worcester teapot and cover, circa 1755Of crisply-moulded strap-fluted globular form, moulded in high relief with rococo scrollwork cartouches framed with sprigs of foliage, the neck of the teapot and rim of the cover with delicate embossed tracery, the finial individually turned, the reserved panels painted in blue with the 'Angler under a Willow Branch' pattern, the main panels with a Chinese fisherman beneath a willow tree and another figure in a sampan by a further willow tree growing from fantastic rocks, a border of floral sprays around the shoulder, 14.5cm high, corresponding workman's mark of TF type on base and inside cover (2)Footnotes:Provenance Phillips, 17 September 1997, lot 257With Steppes Hill Farm AntiquesR David Butti Collection, Bonhams, 10 May 2006, lot 101Pauline and David Tate CollectionWhilst a number of teapots of this shape and pattern are recorded, these vary greatly in the quality of the potting and precision of the decoration. This example is exceptional in every way. A very similar teapot is in the Klepser collection illustrated by Simon Spero (1984), fig.194. Another, with a different shaped finial, is in the Museum of Royal Worcester, illustrated by Branyan, French and Sandon (1989), pattern I.B.22. When Branyan, French and Sandon compiled their Blue and White book in 1980, this pattern was named 'Indian Fisherman' because one of the authors thought the figure on the front had a feather in their hair, looking like a stereotypical character from a Western film. The pattern is actually a fancy version of the design on cups and saucers called the 'Fisherman and Willow Pavilion'. The figure used in the larger panels on teapots and on jugs, is clearly a Chinese fisherman and not a Native American. When the Museum of Royal Worcester updated its case labelling, a more appropriate name was proposed. The preferred name is now 'The Angler under a Willow Branch' pattern. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

William Billingsley is regarded as one of the finest painters of flowers on English porcelain. He arrived at Worcester in the summer of 1808 during the Barr, Flight and Barr period, using the name of Beeley to avoid creditors. He painted roses and other flowers on Worcester porcelain during the first year or two of his time there, before Martin Barr put him to work on refining the Worcester body together with his future son-in-law, A breakfast cup and saucer with identical decoration attributed to Billingsley was sold by Bonhams on 7 June 2006, lot 227 and is illustrated by John Sandon, Worcester Porcelain (2009), p.44.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Squat form silver plated Christopher Dresser jug, with crucifix etched design. Height 22 cm. NOTE: This item has been assigned an ivory exemption certificate number H684QJTS. CONDITION REPORT: Other than being very dirty the jug appears to be in generally very good order. There do not appear to be any significant dents or scratches to the main body of the piece. There is a scratch through the plating on the handle and rubbing to the plating also on the handle. The main body of the piece is so dirty that is difficult to say whether there is any rubbing here. A minor criticism is that the lid does not sit quite flush at the very front. There is a very small gap at the end of the sparrow beak. There is a suggestion that the piece may have been dropped as there is ever so slight buckling of the top of the lid beneath the finial. This is a minor criticism.
