A pair of fine Victorian brass mounted cast iron andirons in Gothic style, mid 19th century, each with fleurs-de-lys finial above crocketed and openwork trefoil tracery, on square section tapering shafts cast with further tracery in recessed relief, to arching front legs, each with a billet bar behind, 76cm high, 26cm wide, 32cm protuberance The present andirons may have derived from designs by the renowned Gothic Revival architect Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin (chiefly known for his work on the Palace of Westminster) for the metalware company of John Hardman & Co of Birmingham. A similar design, only with heraldic elements, appears in Pugin's 1836 publication Designs for iron and brass work in the style of the XV and XVI centuries, and a design with very similar floral trefoil finials appears in Hardman's 1885 catalogue for Church decoration and ornament
