Post Medieval St Peter Apostle Spoon by ChawnerHallmarked for 1766 AD. A silver apostle spoon with oval bowl and square-section shaft, the finial of a bearded male figure holding an open book and a large key, representing St Peter, with flat seal top; the reverse of the shaft bearing full London hallmarks with assay date letter gothic `L` for 1766 and maker`s mark TC over WC for Thomas and William Chawner I. 49 grams, 18 cm (7"). Ex Thompson collection. Thomas Chawner and his brother William Chawner I (not William Chawner II who was apprenticed in 1797) were active together during the period 1759-1773 using the maker`s marks T/WC/C, TC/WC (as here) and W/TC/C. Thomas also uses his own TC mark in the period 1773-1785. The Chawners and their many associates, with the Bateman family, dominated spoon production in the late 18th to 19th century (see http://www.antiquesilverspoons.co.uk/spoonmakers.htm for information).
