Aufwendig gestalteter großer Silberlöffel mit zoomorpher Dekoration, achämenidisch Der massive Stiel in außergewöhnlicher Weise aus drei ineinander übergehenden Tierkörpern zusammengesetzt. Das eingerollte Ende mit einem Drachenkopf. Zur Laffe hin geht der Drachenkörper in einen springenden Panther über. Dessen Vorderläufe gehen wiederum in einen Schlangenkörper über. Der Schlangenkopf bildet die verstärkte Löffelzunge. Schmale, lange Laffe, auf der Unterseite mit reicher floraler Verzierung, an der Spitze links leicht abgenutzt. The coiled finial with dragon’s head. The dragon’s body merges into a leaping panther towards the bowl, and the panther’s front paws blend into a snake’s body. The head of the snake forms the reinforced neck. Narrow, long bowl, the back with lavish floral décor, at the tip slightly worn. Tiny hole on the back of the spoon bowl, otherwise intact. Vergoldetes Fabeltier einer Schiffsfahne, wikingisch, 10. Jhdt. Fabeltier mit s-förmig zurückgebogenem Schwanz und nach vorn gestrecktem Kopf. Auf dem Körper ornamentale Verzierung. Zwischen den Läufen noch Teile des oberen Rahmens der metallenen Fahne. Bronzevollguss mit Spuren flächiger Vergoldung. Länge 6,9 cm. Höhe 6,5 cm. Gewicht 201 g. Es handelt sich um ein außergewöhnlich seltenes Exemplar. Vollständig erhalten haben sich lediglich vier große Wikinger-Schiffsfahnen (in Schweden und Norwegen). An deren Oberkante wurde das aus Metall gegossene Fabeltier aufgesetzt und wies, ähnlich den auf vielen Schiffen dieser Zeit angebrachten Drachenköpfen, nach vorne. Provenienz: Aus alter süddeutscher Sammlung.Zustand: II -A Viking ship's flag finial in the form of a gilded mythical creature ('The Great Beast'), 10th century Mythical creature with tail bent back in an s-shape and head stretched forward. Ornamental decoration on the body. Between the barrels still parts of the upper frame of the metal flag. Full bronze casting with traces of gilding. Length 6.9 cm. Height 6.5 cm. Weight 201 g. This is an exceptionally rare example. Only four large Viking ship flags (in Sweden and Norway) have survived in their entirety. The metal cast mythical creature was placed on the upper edge of the flag and pointed forward, similar to the dragon heads on many ships of this time.Provenance: From an old South German private collection.Condition: II -

The cornu usually consisted of a number of elements: a bell, seven tubular parts, two connecting pieces for the carrying bar (the ornamented extremities preserved here) and even the lateral spreader for stiffening or adjusting the lower segments. Besides the finds from the gladiator barracks in Pompeii, only one other complete preserved example is known, held in a private collection. The individual elements were made of different metal alloys (brass, gunmetal and tin-bronze), which meant that the instrument would have had a multicoloured appearance. A novelty silver pug dog button hook, Crisford & Norris, Birmingham 1906, the finial in the form of a pug's head with anthemion decoration below, 18cm longCondition report: Surface scratches and dents to the handle. There are splits to the seam and a further split to the anthemion panel. The handle does not sit perfectly flush with the hook and the hook is heavily oxidised.
