JOACHIM JOSEPH: (1831-1907) Hungarian violinist, conductor and composer. Conclusion of an A.L.S., J. Joachim, two pages, oblong 8vo, n.p., n.d., incorporating five musical quotations. Joachim suggests several Haydn quartets which could be performed, identifying each with a musical quotation of several bars, and also writing 'or the piece with “God preserve”……or any other piece that has not yet been played in March. Decide with Bargheer, because I don't remember which Haydn pieces I've played in Basel so far', further continuing 'A Bach sonata for piano…..is welcome as middle part, especially if Volkland likes to play: B minor, A major or E major. But if you want a solo, then a) Adagio by Spohr b) Sonata in G major by Tartini (Andante, Allegro, Finale). A Mozart Sonata in F major', further penning two more musical quotations of several bars each, before concluding 'or that of Strinasacchi….might be good too'. Some light uniform age toning and a couple of small, neat tears to the edges, nevertheless an attractive example featuring multiple musical quotations. About VG Provenance: Originally acquired at a Sotheby's auction of 6th December 1991 (lot 99), the cataloguer noting that 'The musical quotations…..comprise the openings of the following works: Haydn's String Quartets, Op.76, no.5; Op.76, no.2 (“The Fifths”); Op.64, no.6; Op.33, no.3 (“The Bird”); Op.64, no.5 (“The Lark”) and Mozart's Violin Sonatas, K.377 in F major and K.304 in E minor'.
DICK PHILIP K.: (1928-1982) American science fiction writer. T.L.S., Love, Phil (with a small ink drawing of a love heart and arrow alongside his signature), one page, 4to, n.p. (Santa Ana, California), 14th January 1981, to Professor Patricia Warrick ('Dear Pat'). Dick commences his letter stating 'I was drawing up a list in my mind of the qualities or aspects or elements that I found in God or connected with God, and the list is awesome', continuing with his ten point list ('Absolute beauty (Pythagoras' kosmos.), Absolute reason (The Logos.) Absolute structure (The macrometasomakosmos.)…..Infinite time (eternity) Absolute and infinite love (agape)……Infinite kindness Infinite patience' etc.) and remarking 'As him extended in space or in his mind as a conception (either will do) world becomes infinitely beautiful and structured and lawful and orderly…..He manifests an absolutely wise rule in the form of law, the natura naturens of Spinoza (a term taken over from the Medieval Scholastics). Note that on this list I do not include absolute being (einai) or absolute consciousness, two of the three aspects of Brahman. For some reason I was not aware of them. That does not mean that they do not exist, but I would identify his absolute being with the absolute reality of the world-order (showing the influence of Spinoza on me)'. Dick concludes by adding 'This is an impressive list. Would it seem to you, from this list, that indeed it was God that I experienced? I would think so. The list seems to point to it'. A letter of interesting content. Accompanied by the original envelope. About EX

ROMERO BRITTO (Brazil, 1963)."Big Hug, 2009.Enamel on iron, copy 104/1000.Signed and justified on the base.Measurements: 29 x 32,5 x 12 cm.Painter and sculptor recognised as one of the leading contemporary artists of his generation. Romero Britto is characterised by the unusual creation of a predominantly colourful expressive language, through which he creates compositions and themes of pop influence, focused on making visible the different racial and socio-economic contrasts. His paintings of great vivacity and aesthetics have helped him to work with renowned brands such as Apple, Pepsi, Absolut Vodka or Disney World, in the creation of artistic designs. In fact, in 1898, Absolut Vodka commissioned the Brazilian artist to create an artistic design with the name of the renowned brand. This event put Britto on the list of notable artists alongside A. Warhol, Ed Ruscha and K. Haring, also known for the famous Absolut Vodka brand. Haring, also known for the famous vodka campaign. In addition, celebrities such as Shakira, Bono, Bill Clinton or Julio Iglesias have chosen him to be the creator of their portraits reinterpreted by the neo-pop artist. Britto's work is influenced by Pop Art, graffiti and elements of stereotypical cubism, a combination that has served him as a letter of introduction to the artistic world. Today, Romero Britto is represented in galleries and museums on five continents, the Carrousel du Louvre, Opera Gallery NY, Museo Reina Sofia, The British Museum, The Saatchi Gallery, Sichuan Lu Xun Museum of Fine Arts.
