A late Victorian diamond horseshoe brooch and gem set hinged bangle, the brooch set with old brilliant cut diamonds, approximately 1.25 carats total, to a later bar brooch, stamped 15ct Platm, horseshoe 1.9cm long, 6.6g gross; together with a half seed pearl, ruby and sapphire set bangle, with a vacant horse shoe motif, 12g grossCondition Report: The brooch is later applied to the bar brooch, the diamonds re present and correct, bright and lively, colour I-K, clarity varying. The size of the horseshoe fits very well over the vacant reserve on the bangle, it is possible the diamond section of the brooch is related to the vacant reserve on the bangle. The bangle has a lot of repairs to the reverse, the clasp isnt very strong, one of the fitting holes to the vacant section is damaged. Sampson Mordan, an early Victorian gold mourning pencil, circa 1850, the barrel with scrolled foliate black and pale blue enamel, with In Memory Of in black enamel and inscribed with the name H. Smith, with arrow detail, a purple foil backed clear stone endpiece, the tip marked with an M, 8.5cm long (retracted), 7.7g gross, in a period fitted burgundy leather pencil boxThe arrow detail was generally used on gold pencils by S. Mordan that did not bear the name. The use of light blue enamel in jewellery often denotes a young or unmarried person, however the use here could just be decorative.Condition Report: The condition is very good for its age, there are a few small chips to the enamel, only really noticeable under close inspection. The piece has not been tested for gold standard, but it is reputed that Mordan used 10 carat gold for his pencils and used the arrow mark to denote this, please see Bull. K, The KB Collection of Gold Pencils, private publication, 2012, page 48The lead hole is approximately 1mm diameter, the slider is in good working order. The pencil has no hallmark. Sterling, 9.2cm long, in a period Tiffany & Co. brown leather box with gold toolingThe building of the Metropolitan Life Tower at One Madison Avenue, Manhattan, New York, was completed in 1909, and was until 1913 it was the tallest building in the world, when it was eclipsed by the Woolworth Building in Lower Manhattan. Due to its historical and cultural importance to both New York City and the United States, the Metlife Tower as it is now known, was named as a National Historic Landmark in 1978, and made an official New York City landmark in 1989.An example of this pencil is illustrated in Bull, K., The KB Collection of Pencils, private publication, 2012, page 177. Condition Report: There is a dent to the base of the tower, and another knock further up the tower. The propelling action is still smooth at time of cataloguing. Loops VGCFormed at Wantage 24.10.1860 as part of 1st Admin Bn. (HQ Reading). On consolidation in 1873 became ‘K’ Company. Battalion became 1st VB Berkshire Regt 1.12.1882.
