Otis King’s Calculator StickAn unusually heavy stick which was originally used as a measure. Below the handle are stick markings at one inch intervals up to 6”. Markings continue down the shaft at 12” intervals The interesting feature is the handle. This can be extended to reveal a spiral calculator. It is an Otis King’s Pocket Calculator, often called a cylindrical slide rule manufactured by Carbic Ltd. of London, England. They produced five types of calculator. This particular item is a Model L ,Type B. Overall length with calculator closed --39 ½”/100cm. Overall length with calculation fully extended—43 ½”/110.5cm. In addition to the scales being identified as No 429 and No 430,.the calculator carries the following details--K 0512 , Made in England, Manufactures details (Otis King’s Calculator- Patents and Sole Manufactures Carbic Ltd. of London, England.)Patent number 183723. This patent was registered in 1921. This was updated the following year hence dating this item to 1921. Overall length with calculation fully extended—38 ½”/980mm The scales are identified as No 414 and No 423,. The patent number is 183723 and was registered in 1921. A Georgian diamond cluster ring, the central stone weighing approx. 1ct, surrounded by sixteen melee diamonds, the white metal set cluster measuring approx. 10.5mm x 10.4mm, fleur-de-lis detail in white metal to shoulders, yellow metal unmarked, gross wt. 2.9g, size K/L, with associated box. Condition - very good, appears damage/repair free, remarkable lack of wear, diamond with minor inclusions visible with 10x loupe only, slight hint of yellow.
A diamond solitaire ring, the principal four claw set round brilliant cut stone weighing approx. 1.52cts, diamond set shoulders, total diamond wt. approx. 1.77cts, 18ct white gold, sponsor 'XM', Birmingham, gross wt. 3.6g, size J/K. Condition - sold without certificate, however, inclusion visible with naked eye, with 10x loupe it can be seen running through star, kite and upper girdle facets and slightly under edge of table, other minor inclusions, stones bright and lively, no yellowness, general wear to band, no evidence of re-sizing.
