DETERMINING 'GERMANS' IN DANZIG Good content T.L.S. on NSDAP letterhead, 1p. 4to., Danzig, July 22, 1940, to the Deutsche Reichsbahn from an unidentified Kreisleiter. In part: '...After a thorough examination...I inform you that K. is also more likely to belong to the Polish minority. Until 1937 he worked for the Polish railroad association...however, one of the sons was raised completely German. One son has been an SS man since 1933, another is a member of the party...With regard to the fact that K.'s adult children are active National Socialists, I support the continued payment of the pension to the railway conductor Leo Klinkosch...' The letter is stamped with a large, blue 'P' indicating that Klinkosch had been determined to be an ethnic Pole. Chip at lower corner, else very good.

Lot 965

A late model flintlock with exceptionally rare provenance. Federal contract issue U.S. model 1816 flintlock musket, .69 cal., with a round smoothbore browned barrel, length of 42 in., overall 57.5 in. long, bayonet lug mounted to the top. The barrel bears the cartouche 'LS', and 'US', designating the gun inspector as Luther Sage. Additionally stamped with correct 'P' cartouche, other cartouches are present on the stock, including 'LS' on the lower portion, and two additional cartouches on the side of the stock next to the trigger guard seemingly 'C' in a circle, and 'V'. The center of the flat lock plate is stamped 'M.T. WICKHAM' in an arc with 'US' over the top, and marked 'PHILA/1831' at the rear of the side plate behind the flintlock, indicating the musket was a later production of gun manufacturer, Marine T. Wickham in 1831. Wickham who was also a master armorer at Harpers Ferry Arsenal, produced approx. 16,600 of his own production guns between 1822 and 1837. Per our consignor the stock, lock, and barrel were recently inspected by master gunsmith, John Zimmerman in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia who also replaced the missing ram rod. A few minor dings and chips to the wood, with the expected scratches and wear to the metal parts. Overall, very good to fine condition for its age. By 1837 flintlocks were being phased out by the American military as the superior percussion firing system muskets and rifles were being phased in; therefore allowing the soldiers the opportunity to buy their service weapons for only a few dollars when mustering out of the military. This lot is accompanied by the pamphlet: 'Catalogue of the Adams Collection of Arms, Weapons, and Relics of American Wars' (New Jersey: Emmor K. Adams), 1918. 55pp. 8vo. The last few pages of the catalog display some damage, repaired with tape. This particular musket is featured in the catalog as item number 282. The musket was presented to the Adams Collection by Charles A. Fretz of Doylestown, Pennsylvania, stating it was used in the Mexican American War by his uncle, who then bought the musket when he left the military. With such amazing provenance this is quite a rare find, and a wonderful addition to any gun collection.

The recto of the document includes a manuscript D.S., 1p. legal folio, Winchester, July 15, 1861 by NATHANIEL HARRIS (1834-1900), Confederate brigadier commanding the 19th Mississippi Infantry Regiment. He led the regiment at Chancellorsville and Gettysburg, and assumed command of Posey's brigade after Posey was mortally wounded. He writes: 'I certify that the within named John B. Adams of Capt. On the verso appears an A.E.S. of EDMUND KIRBY SMITH (1824-1893), Confederate lieutenant general who led troops at First Bull Run, fought under Bragg at Perryville, and later commanded forces in the Trans-Mississippi, crushing Banks in the Red River Campaign.
