Within a few hundred feet of the ground he was fired at by French peasants with shot guns. After landing managed to convince them that he was not German. As he was about to be driven away in a French Air Force car a British patrol arrived and he was arrested as a fifth columnist. Reaching for his identity card Hill was fired on by one of the British Soldiers. When he ducked below the windscreen all the others fired. Hill rolled out of the car into a ditch and when firing had ceased he convinced the officer in charge of his identity. Picture cachet of HMS Biter, with 811 Sqdn on board, a typical escort carrier which helped secure the seas and make the invasion of Europe possible. Personally Signed by Lt. Cdr. l. G. Fraser, Victoria Cross holder, DSC, Royal Navy Res. Won VC Johore Straits July 1945. Eynon Hawkins GC holder RN Torpedoed ship rescues 1943. T/Lt E W K Walton GC DSC RN ( Engineer Officer. ) Account of Deed, At about 12 noon on 24th August 1946, while on a sledging journey, a member of the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey Team fell through a badly bridged crevasse and disappeared. He had fallen some 40 feet and was jammed in a narrow part of the crevasse. Ropes were lowered to him but he could not get them round himself properly and it was impossible to pull him up as he was jammed in the ice. Lieutenant Walton volunteered to be lowered into the crevasse to free him. It was not possible to use an Ice axe in the restricted space, so a spike was sawn off and used as a hand tool to chip away at the ice. After three hours, during which period Lieutenant Walton had been lowered down the crevasse five times, gradually working his way along, he reached the trapped man and freed him so that he could be pulled to the surface. William Goad GC George Cross Holder, Won his George Cross 1942 while serving in HMS Ashanti went over the side in freezing water and rescued an unconscious man. It was blowing a full gale. Charles H Walker GC, awarded the George Cross in 1942 for his bravery in saving the life of a seaman while serving with the Royal Navy. His partner, Constable Terry McFall, won the George Cross for the same action. They were on patrol when they were ordered to chase a car driving the wrong way down a one way street. Fifteen shots were fired at their police car during the ensuing chase. The criminals' car crashed into a lorry and they attacked the police officers, who were trying to arrest them.
