"Deke" Slayton was selected as one of the original Mercury Seven Astronauts in 1959. He was slated to fly the second orbital mission but was grounded with an irregular heartbeat. He stayed with NASA and became Chief of the Astronaut Office and later Director of Flight Crew Operations. He was restored to flight status in 1972 and finally made it into space on July 15, 1975 as part of the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project. His next assignment was as Manager of the Space Shuttle Approach and Landing Tests at Edwards AFB and from there he was named Manager of Orbital Flight Test. He retired from NASA in 1982 and died on June 13, 1993 after a battle with cancer.Height: 5 1/2 in x width: 5 3/4 in.Condition: The item is in good condition with no visible tears, creases, or losses. The item is slightly toned; however, the color is still bold and bright. When inspected under UV light, there is no visible sign of restoration. There is very light fraying along the edges, as expected, which does not affect the center patch.

B. C.
