NIKOLAYEVICH MICHAEL: (1832-1909) Grand Duke of Russia, son of Tsar Nicholas I and brother of Emperor Alexander II. A lengthy A.L.S., Mikhail, four pages, 4to, Oreanda, 18th September 1867, to Prince Nicolas Orloff, in Cyrillic. The Grand Duke refers to his correspondent´s letter received five days ago, regrets that they couldn´t meet each other and states `I am also to blame for my long silence and for not having answered your letters dated May 7-19 and June 9-21. The last one was specially interesting, written after the arrival of our Sovereign to Paris. Before that, Trubetzkoy wrote to me twice, but none of his letters reached me, and same happened with the Sovereign´s telegram sent on May 25th after the assassination attempt. This carelessness does not give any credit to French post and telegraph departments.´ and further continues `His Majesty is doing well and is satisfied with his stay. The Sovereign departures on September 24th. I pray to God that his way back home will be safe. Melnikov promised to take the Sovereign from Kursk by railway. Here he has relaxed and recovered, which was very necessary, because trips abroad and ovations on his way back fatigued him physically and morally.´ Michael Nikolayevich further refers to other Grand Dukes and expresses his thoughts, stating in part `Here we met V. K. Vladimir Alexandrovich. His materialism frightens me. He does not do any exercise, sleeps and eats too much. Besides that he did not like Crimea and got bored here. Instead of going back through Kiev, or Russia, which he knows so little, he requested to travel through Vienna. What a shame!..... However, we and everyone like Alexey Alexandrovich….at the age of seventeen he already has sense of duty, he is polite and courteous, qualities that have not been appreciated yet in his older brothers almost at all. I sympathise him from all my heart.´ and concludes with `You can imagine how happy my wife and I are to meet so often Their Majesties. It is impossible not to love and not to respect them whole-hearted. They are so kind and attentive…´ A very interesting content letter. With a small area of paper loss to the upper left corner of the first sheet, only affecting two words. G £200-300   Nikolai Alekseyevich Orloff (1827-1885) Russian Diplomat, notable for his humanitarian interest in his country's internal affairs. 'My Spirit is the Same' O'MALLEY (Ernie), Republican. A remarkable ALS, 2 pp (single sheet), from Kilmainham Prison, 26/11/1923, to 'Dear K' (evidently a Republican comrade), asking for books to be sent to him, 'Here I am again on the flat of my back as the [hunger] strike terminated on 23/11. I believe I will never be strong again, and may pull round somewhat in time, but what's the odds. My spirit is the same whatever about the body, and after all that's the main thing. My sight is bad and I nearly kicked it several times but I had not the luck to die.' He expects he will not be released before Easter, and in the meantime he needs reading material, particularly literature and art books. He gives a long list of writers and painters, starting with Shakespeare and Botticelli, and says he can send £5, and perhaps 'some of the enthusiasts out there' may do something for him. 'I have work to do for Ireland yet, and can be educating myself as best I can with what books I can lay my hands on'. He says 'Frank [Aiken] is still at the helm, and thank God for that. He understands the Northern question and will pay due attention to it & help to represent better Ireland unpartitioned. He is to my mind the best man by far that we have & I expect great things from him.' He wishes 'K' success with his or her mission, which apparently is in America. 'I will pray for you and for your success and will offer up Communion for you; unfortunately I get it only once a week. It was a terrible trial to be so long without it .. Ever your friend, Ernie.' Ernie O'Malley was very seriously wounded in November 1922, while resisting capture in a Dublin 'safe house'. At that time he was assistant chief of staff of the anti-Treaty IRA. He spent five months in a prison hospital, and then went on a forty-day hunger strike. He was released on medical advice in 1924. He partly recovered his health, and went to Spain and the United States, where he wrote the classic, 'On Another Man's Wound'. A fine revealing letter, which well captures the man, his spirit and his courage. Letters from O'Malley are very uncommon. (1)
