1948 Allard K1 - 1948 K1 chassis fitted with K2 body in period - Exported to New Zealand and owned by Rob Williams for over forty years - Restored in New Zealand with 235 cu. in. side valve Sydney Allard commenced his racing career with a Morgan three-wheeler. Other circuit machines followed before he turned to the world of trials, and what's regarded as the first true Allard was reputedly constructed in just 18 days and nights, and comprised a modified Ford chassis powered by a 3.6-litre Ford flathead V8 engine. However, his most famous special was the Steyr-Allard. This fearsome hillclimb car, powered by a war-surplus, air-cooled 3.7-litre V8 engine driving through twin rear wheels, carried its designer/driver to victory in the 1949 British Hillclimb Championship. The first production Allards quickly ensued. The K was a two-seater Sports model, the L a four-seater Tourer and the J, a two-seater competition version of the K. All three were based on Ford mechanicals (Sydney's day job was running a Ford dealership) and featured the infamous Les Ballamy-designed split front axle that was to become an Allard trademark. The delightfully-presented Allard now offered is a 1948 K1 that was delivered new to a customer in Gloucester as a rolling chassis. Sometime later (c.1950) it was equipped with a K2 body before being imported to New Zealand by Mr James Julian George. Little is then known about the car until its purchase by Rob Williams in 1974. For the next 20 years he vigorously campaigned the Allard in gymkhanas and hillclimbs until, in his own words, the original 3.6-litre (221ci) side-valve engine was 'knackered'. At this point the car was treated to a complete restoration and the engine refurbished around a later 3.9-litre (235ci) block and Offenhauser finned aluminium 400 heads, to which other performance parts were added. It was then raced as late as New Zealand's Leadfoot Festival of 2015, after which Mr Williams retired from the sport. This fascinating and remarkably original Allard is now offered in splendid order, complete with Allard Owners' Club authentication.

The Air Force Cross group of seven medals to Squadron Leader Harold Quittenden, R.A.F., comprising: A.F.C., George VI, reverse dated 1944 (L.G. supplement 36544, 8th June 1944); 1939-45 Star; Atlantic Star; Italy Star; Burma Star; 1939-45 War Medal; Coronation Medal 1953; mounted for wearing and offered with mounted miniature group; Czechoslovak Observers Badge, cased and with certificate; two log books; and a collection of photographs and other associated ephemera. Medals good very fine, Czechoslovak badge extremely fine.. The recipient was born in London, 11th November 1907. He held Aero club certificate 19883, dated 28th August 1939. His commission as Acting Pilot Officer (R.A.F.V.R.) came 13th December 1939 and he then trained under No 1 Air Armament School at R.A.F. Manby, qualifying as Air Gunner, 3rd February 1940. He next joined 608 Squadron R.A.F., flying, among other types, Hudsons and Bothas; as well as undertaking a further round of training to qualify as Gunnery Leader in October 1940. February of the following year saw a move to 68 Squadron, where his career as a Radio Observer in night fighters began. The role of a Radio Observer was to operated the radar equipment that enables night fighters (in this case, initially Blenheims; latterly Beaufighters) to home in on their targets. On the 29th August 1942 he was in action against the Luftwaffe during the 'Norwich Blitz' - one of Germany's notorious 'Baedeker Raids', in which sites of cultural interest were deliberately targeted by bombers in revenge for the destruction of Lubeck. On this occasion he appears, with his pilot Sqn Ldr Howden, to have damaged a Heinkel He III. During this period he evidently showed great aptitude as an instructor: 68 Squadron included a significant proportion of Czech airmen, and Quittenden's diligence in schooling them in the work of Radio Observers was recognised by the honourary award of the Czechoslovak Observer's Badge by Air Vice-Marshal K. Janousek in October 1942. Another notable night time sortie was the early 'Ranger' operation against the Dortmund-Ems Canal, 16th February 1943, in which he and his pilot, Wg Cdr Dotteridge, straffed canal barges and lorries with their Beaufighter. Following service in the Mediterranean and the Far East, Quittenden returned to England, where October 1944 found him in command of Mk X Conversion Flight, a unit dedicated to instructing U.S. and British crews in the use of the latest radar equipment. His A.F.C. had been gazetted in a supplement to the Birthday Honours in June of that year. The post-war period took the recipient to R.A.F. Habbaniya, in Iraq, where his off duty time was devoted to equestrian pursuits.
The Distinguished Service Medal to Engine Room Artificer Ivan Charles Glover who served in H.M.S. Penelope throughout the Second World War: D.S.M., George VI (MX. 55917 I.C. GLOVER. E.R.A, 3,), attractively toned and about as struck; together with a small quantity of ephemera and research, and two copies of 'Our Penelope', including the recipient's own First Edition. H.M.S. Penelope won enduring fame for her service as part of Force K based at Malta during 1941 and 1942. During this period of intense action she sustained so much damage that she earned the nickname 'HMS Pepperpot'. She underwent repairs in New York in the summer of 1942, during which time the book was produced, the first edition being presented to members of the ship's company. A list in the later edition confirms the recipient as having been present during the arduous fighting around Malta. She saw further service in the Mediterranean in 1943. The recipient' D.S.M. was gazetted with the New Year's Honours 01/01/44 under a general heading citing "zeal, patience and cheerfulness in dangerous waters and for setting an example of wholehearted devotion to duty, upholding the high traditions of the Royal Navy". He never received his medal, for on the 18th February 1944, Penelope was torpedoed in the engine room and boiler room by submarine U-410, and sank. E.R.A. Glover was among the 417 men who perished with her. His D.S.M. was presented to his brother and sister at Buckingham Palace in May 1944.
Robert Griffiths Hodgins (South African 1920-2010) THREE MEN WAITING signed, dated 1998/9 and inscribed with the title on the reverse oil on canvas 91,5 by 122cm Robert Hodgins’ drive to experiment with light and colour is one of the things that make his works so visually enthralling. He was greatly influenced by the works of Bridget Riley and Francis Bacon; however it was his interpretations of Alfred Jarry’s greedy theatrical character of Ubu that led him on a visual expedition of painting that has been rarely observed with such fervour by any South African painter. THREE MEN WAITING is only one of a myriad of works created by Hodgins shortly after he participated in the Ubu 101 exhibition that hosted both South African and international artists at the Gertrude Posel Gallery at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg in 1997. Atkinson (2002:13) writes: “Ubu’s diverse presence is felt, not only in the physical characteristics of a host of barely human Hodgins figures – most obviously the truculent, at times oddly vulnerable, businessman – but also in the affective cross current that is the source of power in his work.” In THREE MEN WAITING the viewer is confronted by Hodgins’ theatrical use of colour and an odd Meta referential subtext. The figures are looking out in anticipation, but their presence is unclear; Hodgins animates them in a discomforting posture by grouping the three figures together in this outsized composition. Each character dressed in corporate attire as a subtle reference to Ubu. CS References: • Smith, K. 2000. ROBERT HODGINS. Artthrob, Issue no 34. June 2000. Robert Griffiths Hodgins (South African 1920-2010) THE GREEN TABLE signed, dated 2009 and inscribed with the title on the reverse oil on canvas PROVENANCE Acquired directly from the artist. 60 by 60cm Robert Hodgins was born in England in 1920, and died in 2010. From 1954 to 1962 he presided as a Lecturer at the School of Art, Pretoria Technical College, after which he took up a position as reporter for Newscheck magazine. Between 1966 and 1983 Hodgins Lectured at the University of the Witwatersrand in the Fine Art Department, but it was only at the end of 1983 that he retired and took up painting full-time. The title of this painting is reminiscent of another creative production, The Green Table, a popular Ballet by the German choreographer Kurt Jooss - considered by many to be his greatest work. The ballet’s plot centres on the peace negotiations of the 1930s in Europe. Concerned neither with any specific individuals’ struggles and redemption, nor with working out a gallant fate for mankind, Jooss’ moral position is irreproachable and he drives home his message in a series of stark images. Each scene of the Ballet is a variation on the same theme, like the 41 woodcuts in Hans Holbein's The Dance of Death. The premise is that Death eventually becomes everyone's partner, effectively seducing them into his dance on the same terms by which they had lived their lives. No decisive action, change, or resolution is suggested, and in framing the "Dance of Death" as an iconographic attribute, Jooss seems to say none can be expected in the anticipation of imminent death. As it was not unusual for Hodgins to occasionally reference theatre productions based on universal concerns of the time, it could be argued that this was very well what he intended with THE GREEN TABLE painting. The painting was created a year prior to his death and Hodgins illustrates two figures side by side in an ostensibly familiar manner. Perhaps, the artist here, in this work concedes death as an inevitable partner by titling the work in reference to Jooss’ ballet as a process of self-reflection. The painting was acquired directly from the artist by the current owner. CS References: • Wikipedia. 2011. The Green Table Ballet.
